Normal, default lives. This is my setting choice for all game.

I'm too proud for easy, and I suck too much for hard.

Just curious, how do you derive fun without a challenge? I'm not baiting here, but to me the challenge is the fun, up to a certain point. There seems to be a number of players who will automatically switch to easy before giving normal a fair attempt.
I usually lurk here but I feel compelled to reply to this topic. I'm horrible at all shmups. Literally. Most of them I can't even get past the first level, even on the easiest settings. So what do I do? Cheat codes! See, what attracted me to shmups in the first place was never the challenge. For some reason I've always been attracted to the ship design, weapon design and level design. I also love seeing all of those bullets fly everywhere. So whenever I get the chance I'll cheat my way through them. And sometimes, like an above poster jokingly said, I'll sit there and watch the demo. I don't know what it is but I love seeing them in action. It honestly never gets old. Maybe it's because I have horrible ADHD and shmups are one of the few genres that hold my attention anymore.

Anyway, I just wanted to throw that out there. I doubt there's anyone else on these boards that is the way same (which is why I lurk instead of posting).

Why am I getting the faintest idea here that this post is by Malc simply just screwing around.
Anyway, if not, if the shmups you play are so difficult for you, I'm only curious now which ones you are playing?

I play everything from Space Invaders to Cave's games. My favorite shmup is Progear.

The ship design, weapon design and level design of Space Invaders are unsurpassed.

For the game that basically started the genre, I agree. :)

I usually play on default settings. Sometimes I mess around on Easy or Hard to see what it's like, but default settings get the most play time.

defaults.

but at times i consider exchanging some bombs for lives. i fail at panic bombing. don't like it either. i should be able to get further in many of the games i play if i'd just bomb when i'm about to die, but i have much more fun trying to survive without bombing anyway. i usually die with full bomb stock, making the games harder (to survive) than they were intended...

so what's fair?
1 life for 2 bombs? 3?
bombs save lives

you might as well just credit feed if you're worried about lives settings

savestate/stage select practice works much better than credit feeding though
