Maybe you're thinking of http://shmups.system11.org/forum/viewtopic.php?t=1944 that thread?

When I buy shmups I usually just watch the demonstrations, saves me from having to do anything like press buttons. All you people actually playin the games, HA. Might as well put the quarter in your ass cuz you just played YOURSELF
_____
anyways I almost always go full default, i'll kick the difficulty down a few notches if i'm practicing or something. there aren't many games where i'll choose to make it harder on myself, save for games made to play like that like mushi's ultra mode

Just curious, how do you derive fun without a challenge? I'm not baiting here, but to me the challenge is the fun, up to a certain point. There seems to be a number of players who will automatically switch to easy before giving normal a fair attempt.black flag nc wrote:Dude, usually as easy as I can get it! It's not a contest. There's a difference between making things easier and taking the challenge out of a game. Invincibility codes for example should be outlawed.RGC wrote:Just curious, how do you derive fun without a challenge? I'm not baiting here, but to me the challenge is the fun, up to a certain point. I do agree, but surely making each game as easy as you can possibly make it is the same as saying "taking as much challenge out as possible".black flag nc wrote:There's a difference between making things easier and taking the challenge out of a game. Default - the two sweetest words in the English language.
If I want to take it easy with a shooter, I'll allow myself more credits instead of changing the default settings. That way I'm still dealing with what it throws at the player at normal difficulty (rank nonwithstanding) so if I do decide that game is worth making a serious attempt at, I won't just get blown out of the water.
Except Garegga. Nowadays I usually just use the MAME cheat to turn off its rank system.
The various rank tricks like timed suicides and holding fire make for an interesting game, and I had fun playing around with them for a while, but now it's more brain sweat than I feel like putting into a game about blowing shit up.

I also sometimes play on training and advanced modes with games that offer them (Armed Police Batrider, Battle Bakraid...) Training when i'm sick of getting brutalized, Advanced for fun/practice or if i've mastered Normal.

Playing for fun, increase lives a little, but don't touch the difficulty, playing for hi scores, default settings.

I usually lurk here but I feel compelled to reply to this topic. I'm horrible at all shmups. Literally. Most of them I can't even get past the first level, even on the easiest settings. So what do I do? Cheat codes! See, what attracted me to shmups in the first place was never the challenge. For some reason I've always been attracted to the ship design, weapon design and level design. I also love seeing all of those bullets fly everywhere. So whenever I get the chance I'll cheat my way through them. And sometimes, like an above poster jokingly said, I'll sit there and watch the demo. I don't know what it is but I love seeing them in action. It honestly never gets old. Maybe it's because I have horrible ADHD and shmups are one of the few genres that hold my attention anymore.RGC wrote:Just curious, how do you derive fun without a challenge? Anyway, I just wanted to throw that out there. I doubt there's anyone else on these boards that is the way same (which is why I lurk instead of posting).

On my MAME I usually have infinite lives on so I don't have to keep reselecting my ship and crap. As far as the few non-MAME games that I have, I usually don't have a consistent setting. I like to switch it up. I usually max out lives and/or continues, but I rarely use bombs so I don't worry about them.
