If you just want games, go with the 360.
A lot of people call it the "FPS" console, but its library is far more diverse than its predecessor's. I mean, yes, on the shooter front you've got Halo 3, Gears of War, Bioshock, etc., but outside of that you really have a lot of quality stuff. Earth Defense Force 2017 is a really neat arcade style shooter, fighting hundreds enemies at once. Lost Odyssey is the best thing Sakaguchi has done since Final Fantasy VI and most assuredly leaves the rest of the FF series in the dust. Mass Effect is a really good western RPG with a great story and some pretty decent gameplay. Of course, Senko no Ronde, G.Rev's shmup/fighter hybrid is out, in the US even. And that Raiden Fighters collection is coming to the 360 in Japan in a month, and hopefully will come to the US at some point. Can't forget that Treasure is making a new shooter for the 360 as well. And then you've got Ninja Gaiden 2 coming soon. And everything I just listed for you is exclusive to the 360.
Then there's Xbox Live Arcade, which has a really good selection for fans of old school arcade games and your casual friends alike. Omega Five is a really solid shmup. Rez HD is beautiful, Ikaruga is around the corner, and there's just tons of stuff on there thats really worth downloading.
So yeah, if you want good games, then most certainly go and get a 360.

yeah I rly can't see what's wrong with the dualshock ^^ The 360 pad is incredibly similar to it.
I think the PS3 has quite a couple of interesting games on it now, not to mention the future Wipeout and God Of War games, Metal gear and FF if you're interested, DMC4 is there, Gran turismo, Ratchet & clank, uncharted, perhaps Little Big Planet and Folklore... 360 doesn't shine much in my mind because most of its best titles are those limited FPSs that would be far better off played on a PC, although for me Dead or Alive 4 and Ninja Gaiden 2 are a major plus.

360 is mainly FPS? i never play FPS, and i dislike FPS, yet 360 bring me back to gaming from a long sleep after the dreamcast. don't mean to offend, but your 360 is mainly FPS statement is pretty ignorant.ROBOTRON wrote:I'm going PS3. 360 is mainly FPS...the only thing I'd do with it is play the old school arcade games if I owned one. PS3 actually has a few games I'd want to play now and T6 is in development for it as well.
let's put it this way, at this point of time, 360 has better library of games. PS3, if everything goes well, might get to see just as much good games in the future. please note the 'if' and 'might'

PS3. I have more faith in Sony than Microsoft. They've been rocking for the past 12 or so years and while that doesn't mean they'll be successful this time, I've been a happy customer for such a long time that I'd take the risk. They could have started this generation better, but they're doing a better job now as the sales show.
That plus promising future games and no region lock. Japanese games without having to mod my system? Sign me up!

I'm gonna start out by saying I own both consoles, so my opinion isn't based on passed experiences with either brand, or whatever. As of now, my PS3 gets way more time with me, than my 360? Why?
PS3's Online is free, and easy to set up. So all I'm paying for, is whatever full game titles I snag, and there's alot out, and coming down the pipeline for the people who like "Arcade" style gaming.
PS3's catalog, while smaller than the 360's (it came out a year late, so it's expected) is far more appetizing to me, than the 360's. That includes each system's exclusives, and what is multi platform, I feel more comfortable with the Dual Shock on. Also, what's coming out this year for the PS3 > 360 in all categories.
The PS3 is more reliable/durable/built better. I've had to get my 360 fixed 3 times in the past 6 months. Wanna know how many times I had my PS3 fixed?

PS3 has a fantastic line-up of games that are going to be released this and next year. It has a stellar future in comparison to the 360, where I can only think of Raiden Fighters Jet, Too Human and Ninja Gaiden II being released for it. However, at the moment the 360 is killing the PS3 with it's variety of games.
The variety of games on the 360, however, is limited. Most of them are the typical sports/racing/FPS types.. good luck finding a decent RPG or shooting game that isn't an Xbox Live title. Speaking of Live, it's quite good. Not the ability to play online or anything, I'm talking about prices. Stuff like Bomberman and Rez HD are a steal at only $10 or $15 bucks each. It has Metal Slug 3, too, but..
This brings me to another point. The 360's dpad is extremely, terribly, insanely shitty quality and you're never going to want to use it ever. Dubbed the "weapon changer", that's pretty much all it's used for. I find it really difficult to play games like MS3 with an analog stick too, but stuff like Rez fits really well.
The Wii.. heh, it's living off Brawl and crap like Wii Fit (which, according to Miyamoto, isn't meant to get you into shape! But Wii Fit is a trendy and catchy phrase so they just threw it in there. Heh.) that appeals to casuals. Not necessarily a bad thing but there's little to look forward to this year for the Wii past March, when Brawl is out.
So, to summarize the current market:
360 - decent for now, leading, reasonable future, multi-platform titles, extreme failure rate
Wii - lots of shovelware, although has a few decent titles and stellar ones (SMG, Zack and Wiki, etc), barely anything in upcoming titles
PS3 - no games, fantastic line-up for the future
Really though, it's your choice. I have a 360 right now and it's good, but I'm worried about the failure rate and I'd much rather follow Sony for a number of reasons. Plus another ICO game gets me all excited inside. It's really a matter of what kind of games you're into, and what games will be cross-platform and exclusive.

Umm... Lost Odyssey is probably the best RPG to come out in damn near a decade and Senko no Ronde got a US release at full price.Erinu wrote: The variety of games on the 360, however, is limited. So... there are certainly shooters and JRPGs to be had on the system. Though for western RPGs, you aren't going to get much better than Mass Effect.

Modding a 360 is strictly for piracy only. I wouldn't do it unless you want to cheat your gamerscore into the thousands (which is really childish, although the sense of achieving something is what sold WoW and Call of Duty 4, so I can see the appeal of doing such a thing) but it's mostly used for people who don't want to pay for their games. I'll say no more...yojo! wrote:dont want to hijack the thread but I have a small question regarding the 360. I've seen many placed selling pre-modded X360. US and JP)
Senko no Ronde isn't a shooter. It's a.. I don't know, shooting fighter? "Hybrid game"? Ask dai jou bu, he's obsessed with the game. I bought this for $60 when it was released in the US and was sorely disappointed that the online community is non-existent. The only retail shooter I've seen for the 360 was the multi-platform Shikigami no Shiro III, which also saw a PC and Wii release. Is there anything else?jp wrote:Umm... How is Lost Odyssey? The US trailer was incredible. It seems like they're really trying this time. I didn't like Blue Dragon at all, despite the fact that I had access to the English version a few months before most US owners (I have an asian 360, plus it was released with English text and subtitles way before the US release) so I've somewhat turned my back on Mistwalker since then. If it's really good, I might look into ordering it.
There's only a handful of jRPGs for the 360. Eternal Sonata comes to mind and there's the upcoming Tales of Vesperia, but what else? What's good in the jRPG department for the 360? It seems to be lacking right now. In any case, the 360 is lacking in both shmups and general w/jRPGs.

I think the answer he was looking for was "Yes, you can play imports from what I've been able to find, with a modded 360."Erinu wrote:Modding a 360 is strictly for piracy only. Well, shmupwise that Raiden Fighters collection comes out next month. And lets not forget that Treasure is making a brand new 2D shooter for the Xbox360. Also, I guess Raiden IV is coming to the 360 as well. On top of that, I imagine G.Rev's new game will wind up on the 360 too (if they do a home port) since its hardware they know.
Lost Odyssey is excellent. It is easily Sakaguchi's best game since Final Fantasy VI. In a lot of ways, it IS a next-gen Final Fantasy VI, and the game is brutally difficult and forces you to actually use strategy and the Rings in order to get by. I just finished it last night and loved every second of it. Definitely good stuff and definitely worth buying.
In so far as other JRPGs, you're right, there isn't much out. But then again, there currently isn't much out on the PS3 either. Though was Tales of Vesperia ever officially confirmed as a 360 exclusive? I kept hearing rumors, but never anything concrete.
At any rate, I know Microsoft is making a huge effort to get more JRPGs on their system. Personally, I think they should get Mistwalker to delay Blue Dragon 2 for now and fire up Lost Odyssey 2,
And thats coming from a Blue Dragon fan.
I do hope Feel Plus starts working on a new 360 RPG soon though... that would be awesome.
So, for JRPGs out right now, there's:
Blue Dragon - Good, mainly if you enjoy grinding, though grinding isn't necessary.
Eternal Sonata - Horrible and the people who made it should never make another game ever again.
Enchanted Arms - OK.
Lost Odyssey - Brilliant. Simply... brilliant.
Coming in the future we've got:
Blue Dragon 2 - Given the ending of Blue Dragon, it has a lot of potential.
Infinite Undiscovery - New game from Tri-Ace coming exclusively on the 360.
Last Remnant - Some Squeenix game. Coming to PS3 also.
Spectral Force 3 - I don't know anything about this, personally, I hate Atlus and all they do, but if I was a betting man, I'd wager this will be some SRPG with anime looking characters.
Magna Carta 2 - I know nothing about it.
And supposedly a bunch more JRPGs are going to be announced in the future for the 360. I guess Microsoft is throwing cash around like its nothing in Japan to get these, but hey, whatever works.
Edit: Also, it may not be an RPG, but Yukio Futatsugi (Panzer Dragoon Saga) has a new studio now and is working on something. And since he used to head up Microsoft Game Studios Japan, I have a good feeling he'll probably keep playing for the home team.

A recent study has said that they found a 16% failure rate (60% of which can be attributed to "Red Ring of Death") after testing 1,000 360s. Plus, the new chipsets will alleviate this. Yes 16% is pretty big, but considering Microsoft has it covered in it's warranty, it is not like you have a chance of blowing $300 if you get the Red Ring.Erinu wrote:

And just how long has Sony been saying this? Besides Metal Gear Solid 4 they have yet to come close to delivering on any of their lofty exclusive promises. If you are getting a system for gaming right now, and you don't want an inexpensive Blu-Ray player, get a 360.
Except that would be wrong. Modding a 360 is strictly for piracy or using backups of games you already own (lol right). It doesn't make the thing region free. Apparently there's a modchip in the works (I haven't researched this for awhile) that allows you to use games from anywhere, but it doesn't really seem worth it, considering you're almost always connected to Xbox Live wihle you're playing a game, Microsoft can just flat out ban your console from either Live or entirely.Spazicon wrote:I think the answer he was looking for was "Yes, you can play imports from what I've been able to find, with a modded 360."Erinu wrote:Modding a 360 is strictly for piracy only. Sony have been boasting this? "They" aren't the developers. Apart from the Gran Turismo and ICO teams, which are part of Sony's development, "they" are not Konami, and they aren't releasing MGS4. Sony didn't release Disgaea 3, Nippon Ichi did. Sony don't really have any control over when a developer's finished with their game unless they're working on it themselves.Tempest wrote:And just how long has Sony been saying this? Christ, I'm not going through the trouble of looking up any interviews, but I am sure one of Sony's reps has said somewhere that the graphical possibilities in future games was a major selling point.Erinu wrote: Sony have been boasting this? The question I want answered is this:
Is the possibility that this system may make some kickass games that might be exclusive to it at some unforeseeable point in the future more or less of a selling point for the PS3 than the 360 or the Wii?
Thanks for the info; Well that stinks; I don't want to fork +$500 just to play one game... Well, of course they're going to say something like this. They're trying to sell their console to potential buyers. It's like a website. Once you have it up and running, you need to advertise in order for it to get attention. That's how the world works.Tempest wrote:Christ, I'm not going through the trouble of looking up any interviews, but I am sure one of Sony's reps has said somewhere that the graphical possibilities in future games was a major selling point.Erinu wrote: Sony have been boasting this? Of course there's going to be PS3 exclusives in the future. But there isn't a great deal of games for it right now.

I believe you are mistaken. Now, I must admit that I've never played on the 360; but that pad looks like a slightly improved Controller S, which was very comfortable. In contrast, the Dualshock 3 -- I'm assuming it is exactly like the previous ones, which, to put mildly, were very far from ideal.PROMETHEUS wrote:yeah I rly can't see what's wrong with the dualshock ^^ The 360 pad is incredibly similar to it.
The 360's obvious advantages? Smoother shape, a well-placed analog pad, and analog triggers.

The PS3 is as much as a "FPS console" as the 360 is, only with a worse controller for playing them. There's Halo and Bioshock on 360, PS3 has Haze, Killzone and Resistance. Racing titles, same story really; Forza vs. Gran Turismo. Almost everything else noteworthy in these genres is multiplatform.
