Battle Garegga (Saturn)

Post by Tigershark »

Suddenly last night it clicked and I understood and then there was light and the game got much better.

Yeah.

I keep playing this game in the hopes that the same thing will happen for me (and to listen to the music).

To no avail, Cave and Psikyo win, Raizing holds no appeal for me.

Played it for the first time last week and thought... nothing. Maybe that there are not enough bullets and it looks kind of easy but who knows what it looks like when played for score.

Well, try playing it for longer than 5 minutes on the same credit and understand why you suddenly start dying. It took me a while to understand that rank level was being increased for pretty much every possible reason.

this was the first "modern" shooter i ever clicked with back in 2003( i think gigawing, mars matrix and dodonpachi d.o.j were the first i tried but i thought they were too much at the time) .. the click was pretty instant as well :P a few pointers from rando (he taught us teh flamingo and bridge medal tricks! )and i was even scoring ok !(think i was 4th back then in a combined table for all the characters with a 4.5 millish score... just shows how many more score players there are nowadays and how much everyones improved! )

I love Battle Garegga, but it's also one of the most frustrating shooters I know. Once you understand how to score it gets really addictive though.

I play the game regularly and I'm still trying to get over 7 million, but I can never handle more than 2-3 credits at a time, or my blood starts to boil.

I'm scared to touch it for some reason. It's like it carries the plague. Or maybe I just want to play everything else that has been called "easier".

BG is pretty hard, but for some reason I don't find it frustrating. Ok, it can be if you screw up the score tricks but just playing and dying gives me that 'try again' feeling. Even though losing your medal chain is aggravating as hell you're never going to play the game perfectly (or at least I'm not), so you tend to feel like you can keep going and maybe get it back pretty quickly.

Hmm, well I find it more interesting than most Cave bullet hell shmups but that's just personal taste. I found the guide on this site really helpful and adopt the tactic of only levelling up when I really have to. It certinaly makes some interesting boss battles. Level three is one of the best levels on any shooter I've played.

When I have the time I'm definitely going to push this one until it 'clicks' for me. I want to see the light as I love the style so much...

Well that's what I did and I came pretty far on my first credit, like stage 4 or 5. Still didn't seem very hard to me @_@ It's also clear that many of those fast patterns are supposed to be dealt with by knowing accurately where to place yourself and move, so those seemingly hard parts are probably not that hard either...

The problem with Garegga is that the difficulty increases like this:

Getting to Stage 4 or 5 is not hard at all. Stage 5 boss to Stage 7 is where the hell really starts.

I have nothing to add besides this being the most rewarding shmup I've ever played.

I can't 1cc it, but I've made it damn far

I used to call my Saturn a Battle Garegga adapter, being that the game was permanently placed inside it for 6 months (yes, I had access to all the other games, RSG sucks a fat one)

@Prometheus: I think you shoul'd read the strategy guide Icarus made about this game, it really explains how the system work. If you don't control the rank, actually, the game become unbeatable, and controlling rank while executing milkings and scoring tricks it's really hard. The game is also full of little secrets, and it is one of the few game in wich suicide it's necessary to go on and score well: you shoul'd really try to play it properly.

I've been playing this in MAME a bit and am enjoying it. Whats the going rate of a bare Garegga board these days?
