Electronic Arts: Good or Bad?

Post by FatCobra »

EA Games, or aka "That evil game company that makes the same damn football game every year and charges $50 for each upgrade." Now, I know that most people here may not like them, but I can see good and bad in almost everything. So, here's my take on EA.....

Obviously the yearly sports games makes them suck so bad and gets a frat boy following. I'll never understand why Madden gamers have to scream so loudly when they score a touchdown, but I find all forms of sports boring.

They also a huge pile of licensed crap, like the Harry Potter and Lord of the Rings games, but they also publish some nice titles. After all, these were the guys that once made the Need for Speed series before they went "Underground" and started to suck again. I enjoyed Burnout 3 and Timesplitters: Future Perfect, both parts of a series where eariler entries weren't published by EA.

Of course, this leads to the next question: are they truely evil? They have lots of money, so they can buy out whoever they want and absorb them into their collective (we are EA, you will be bought out , resistance is futile  ). I would not be suprised if they tried to make their own console in the next couple of years. Remember, a certain monopolistic computer software company already has a certain black and X shaped console out in the market.

I'll start to worry when I actually see something to buy in their lineup.

Or if they buy Konami.

Damn, I forgot to add one more option: it should also include I WISH SOMEONE WOULD CLUSTER-BOMB THEIR HEADQUARTERS TO HELL!

And someone already voted so now I can't go back and edit my poll.

I don't give a shit about EA one way or another (and voted appropriately) but I was curious if I could still edit a voted-in poll. Apparently I can. :)

EA makes/publishes games that I like to play. I buy EA games because I find some of em to be enjoyable.
Here are some...
Need For Speed series...I own all except for Porsche Unleashed.
007 series (FPS)
Madden Football on the Sega Genesis
Burnout 3
SSX (SnowBoarding SuperCross)

Then again, I've enjoyed EA's games LONG before some of you were even gaming! Back then, they were known as ECA.
Some titles for the Commodore 64 computer that I like...
Lords of Conquest
Bards Tale Trilogy
Racing Destruction Set

I remember the Bards Tale Trilogy as well. My dad used to play those games on our Apple IIGS all the time. God bless that little computer's soul, it had so many fun games on it. I have NFS: Porcshe Unleashed, and it's a fairly good game, that is, if you love Porsches as much as I do. For me, EA is a mixed bag, but I wouldn't miss them if they suddenly disappeared.

SOUKYUGURENTAI

I don't care where they've been or what they smell like since that game, but I could never hate them. They published souky damnit.

The SSX series is fantastic, other than that I hate how they've been gobbling up everyone.

I also really enjoyed MOH: Frontline on PS2.

Back in the 1990's, EA was good. Published the two Razing shooters for the Saturn, they make me happy. Now with the buying everything with sports, they are really ticking me off. BOMB their HQ!!!

Besides the Raizing shooters and maybe Rabbit, EA has done nothing for me. Not a single game they've created has perked my interest. In fact, they destroyed one of my favorite franchises, the Ultima series.

Road Rash 3 is one of the top Genesis games, and it's a shame people will judge it by the fact that it was developed by EA.

Otherwise, I don't care for anything they make (besides Garegga :))

Only the PS version of Viewpoint. Sammy published the Genesis Viewpoint by themselves.

And the EA side in the PS-era Square Electronic Arts LLC only helped distribute the games, not publish (or even localize) them.

I was kinda hoping that EA would use Criterions Renderware software to develop a Road Rash sequel based on the 3DO version. Its actually one of their best franchises. Granted, the last few outings of it on PS1 and N64 were lame and I didn't even purchase them because they got so much bad coverage.

EA are such a big company that makes so much money you would think they would actually produce some Risque products alongside some of their more established franchises. Yet they don't.. a bit like Sega.
This industry has become 2 dimensional as it transcended into a 3D world.

EA is the Devil!
:D

But Need For Speed II & III were cool. I loved the video side shows in part 2 especially.
That's where I learned about the MCLarern F1 back in 1997!

Oh & don't forget about Scud Race from SEGA.

Electronics Arts was an innovative company under Trip Hawkins in the 1980s. Who here remembers Pinball Construction Set, Music Construction Set, Archon, Hard Hat Mack (not innovative but nice), Axis Assassins (not innovative but nice Tempest clone), and Murder on the Zinderdorf?

Music Construction Set was awesome especially on a Mac. I learned music theory from that "game" and it greatly helped when I took piano lessons.

Pinball Construction Set was another awesome "game". You learned what a good layout was by trial and error.

The EA of today is nothing but a shell of its former self. Hell, it's really a holding company that buys innovative companies and kills them. There is ZERO innovation and nothing more than sequels of sequels ad infinitum.

EA is evil, but what is more evil is that the company is largely a reflection of today's society. Obviously someone is buying that shit.

One of the reasons EA is stupid is because they make shallow beat-em-ups based on popular franchises in a blatant money grab (LotR).

On a completely different and totally unrelated topic, weren't those TMNT games from Konami awesome? :D

No, they were just decent. The only REALLY FSCKIN' GOOD beat-em-ups are the Streets of Rage trilogy.

EA are evil in all kinds of ways  . Mainly because of the following reasons:

- They buy up good developers, restrict their creative talent and rush their games to make maximum profit. (Eye of the Beholder, Wing Commander, Privateer and numerous other great series are EA responsible of killing)

- Maxis did not use to be a rehash developer. But when EA got their dirty hands on them, they delayed their real sequels to produce hundreds of updatepacks to Sims and SimCity :P

Then EA successfully has messed up everything good they have come up with too.. Need for Speed for example, used to be my favourite racing game series. NFS 3 Hot Pursuit an awesome game, but look where the series is now, it has developed into some ghetto-mtv-this-game-is-da-pimp fast and the furious wannabe underground.. Their SSX game series was great, but then they decided to mess with everything that worked and crap that series too..

Something about EA just screams mainstream, games made by a company with no taste for gamers with just as bad taste. Since SSX Tricky I have not bought another EA game, and probably never will again unless they resurrect Origin and bring me a Wing Commander collection for the PS2 :P

i havent bought an EA game for at least 3 years.

I finally realised with madden i was basically buying the same game over and over again. I think they do embody the corporate culture in gaming, and they stifle creativity as well.
