You're thinking of the guy from Malcom in the Middle.... Bryan Cranston, I think his name is. He's also in a new show called Breaking Bad.GaijinPunch wrote:Was he the dentist in Seinfeld? Tim What's-his-name?
Feedback will set you free.

I haven't watched much of him, but having experienced what I have of the press in recent years I was skeptical enough of this assertion to have a quick look around...imagine my lack of surprise when I found this on Wikipedia -incognoscente wrote:He never seems to be satisfied with any answer
Rose is sometimes criticized for going too easy on his guests, with the suggestion that this is how he gets them to appear on the show. In the June 24, 2001 New York Times Magazine, Fox News Channel executive Roger Ailes said he had received written assurance from Rose that he would not be asked about politics during his interview.
There are other relevant links on that Wiki page, including an article on his (among others') treatment of Henry Kissinger...heck, maybe by today's standards he is a "tough" journalist, but that's saying remarkably little.

I've been satisfied with all the interviews I've seen. And his theme music is awesome.

Thanks for the link, Macaw.
I found the timing of this thread interesting as I had watched short clips from that YouTube account last week and my comment stemmed from those I had seen. I had not had the time to watch one of the full shows until today.
Early in the interview, Stallone finishes an answer and Rose can be heard to reply, "Good." That and the many bouts of laughter are what had been missing from the clips I saw before. Rose had not seemed to communicate to his guest that he enjoyed or appreciated their answers along the way. Certainly it will vary from guest to guest and it may have been the result of film editing, but when I saw no cases of him sharing a moment with a guest, I perceived it as a lack of empathy.
With that perception now put to rest, I am in the Charlie Rose is Awesome camp.

So...
What is with Charlie Rose's newfound notoriety?
He has been doing the exact same show for at least the past 10 years.
Yet, in just the past 3 months I've been hearing his name dropped in the most unusual of places.
Just moments ago, a Saturday Night Live skit made a reference of Charlie being a celebrity crush. (truth be told, he's been at the top of my celebrities I'd like to meet list for at least 10 years...) (not that I really have such a list…)
I did notice, recently, that Google is now one of his primary funders. Are they to thank for his more widespread recognition (just like in the late 90's when USA Networks was a primary funder and tried changing the show into the typical late night infotainment (thankfully that only lasted a couple seasons)).
So. Macaw, (and others posting in this thread) how did you become aware of Charlie's unmatched discussion moderation?

He's an intelligent, knowledgeable, and well-spoken discussion moderator.doodude wrote:Never heard of him...
Who is he, whats he do & why does it matter?
He has hosted an hour-long show on Public Television for a long while.
The show is just straight talk about whatever the subject may be.
The number and types of people who have sat at his round table is just mind blowing. Check his official site for pretty much any topic that comes to mind and you'll probably find a video with notable people discussing the topic.

Charlie Rose is his own producer, I believe.
I liked his interview (apparently from some years back) with Dick Cavett. Dick was pretty awed by the fact that you couldn't see the cameras...eh, won't spoil it, it's at the end of this segment (Google Video).

I've often wondered about the cameras. It really seemed nobody ever looks directly at them, now I know why.Ed Oscuro wrote:Charlie Rose is his own producer, I believe.

Yvette Vega has been executive producer since the beginning afaik.
Charlie Rose is perfect if you want to get tired in a hurry. I have never been able to enjoy his show without falling asleep. And I consider myself an intellectual.
That being said, I don't think there is a show with good, thourough interviews anymore. 60 Minutes in the late 1980's was very, very good, but is lacking curently.

That's too bad. But I know how it is. A lot of people have trouble listening to other people talk for more than 30 seconds at a time without lots of moving cg backgrounds (CNN, CNBC, etc) and artificial set-peices to distract your mind and make it think a lot more is going on.drboom wrote:Charlie Rose is perfect if you want to get tired in a hurry. He certainly does things his way.Ed Oscuro wrote:Maybe I was thinking of director. Hmm.
