Personally I find Border Down, Under Defeat, ESPgaluda, DoDonPachi all much much much better than Ikaruga could ever hope to be. Ikaruga seems more like a well made flash game(look at the file size) than a well made shump.
I love all the games you listed, but please tell us what is the point about the file size. Btw the graphic work behind Ikaruga was done in part by the GRev guys.
There isn't much to ikaruga as all you do is switch colors and shoot the opposite color while trying not to die.
Simply not true.
But hey, if you don't like it, nevermind, thou if you don't notice bullet eating you're missing a big part of the game.

Sorry to interrupt, but this is ridiculous. Making a complete software product in little file size is a sign of good programming practices and using low-level programing languages, when flash is an example of neither. Take a look at this (take the exe or hires video capture if your system is too slow) and know that 20 whatever megabytes is a decent size for the game of Ikaruga's complexity if you spend them just right.

Also, Rob's taste about music should be cause of public frown

Even though Ikaruga looks nothing like a Flash shmup. Wasn't made by a company that would ever bother with Flash. And for about 26 MB is a bit complex, quite difficult, and not to mention it actually looks good.
It's like saying Asteroids sucks because it's about 9KB (and not even that I don't think)
I was simply stating a point about ikaruga's file size is all. I love the music in Ikaruga...infact its got a great soundtrack. Ikaruga never kept my attention like the other games I previously listed have. Ikaruga is a well made game but I dont get the same feeling of enjoyment from it as I do most other shmups I have played.
i figured I would get some heat from my ikaruga is like a well made flash game remark. The flash game feel was prob. not the most appropriate comparison I could have used...but it was what I was thinking of at the time. I would love to know how they can have such a great OST as part of the game and STILL keep it under 20MB. But enough about that.
Why I dont find ikaruga as rewarding as some others is that as I stated the difficulty is there from the switching colors element added to it. IF ikaruga played out like most other shmups..I feel it would be much more easy to complete as you can die if you dont switch to a certain color in a second or less before another color hits you.
I like ikaruga...do not get me wrong. I would never let go of my Dreamcast copy. I simply do not feel ikaruga is as good of game as alot of people make it out to be. It also feels really different playing a shmup that actually rewards you for not shooting down any enemies at all.

The music is synthesized, not sampled. See the demo I linked to above, it's basically same thing (several minutes of high quality sound and 3D video in just over 200 KB).

Ooooo, wow. You would be right. I think that is pretty neat personally. I am used to mainly dealing w/ MP3's and I have never gotten into much depth or anything about other sound file formats. I suppose a lot of compression and other things must have gone into the game. I wonder why they would choose to compress it into such a small file and why not let it stay rather large like most other ports of shmups generally are.

Filesize has nothing to do with it. Most shooters are very small as far as the actual program is concerned. Most of the space taken up is in art and music. Ikaruga being as small as it is just means it was programmed very clean and efficiently.
If Battle Garegga or Dodonpachi were programmed more efficiently, and took up less space than they do, would that somehow make them worse games? That doesn't even make sense.
insomnia.ac would actually be praising the thing so it's better

It looks like a boss designed with appearance being the only thing in mind and it looks very stupid. You might get caught by an awkward kick while the camera is swooping around and what's left are a collection of uninspired bullet patterns that make Strikers 1945 II's seem really complex. Strengths: novelty and different bullet shapes. And that's supposed to be an epic finale.

The novelty value is still pretty strong, though. After all, you don't fight colossal humanoids accompanied by eerie chorale in every game you encounter, heh.
