I really like RS and Ika. They'll always stay in my top 10.
RS has an excellent level design and most of the bosses are pure awesome. The atmosphere is incredible. Stage 5 is probably my favourite stage in a videogame ever. But to be honest i have to admit that the chaining system is rather messed up. You shoot red enemies 90% of the time and it's not flexible at all. In Ikaruga Treasure has fixed this problem. Here you can chain all enemies no matter what polarity they are. The thing i like most in Ika is that there are chains and places that are everything but obvious. Before the Appreciate DVD and other superplay vids i had to make my own sketches and spent lots of time figuring the chains out, it was really fun. It wasn't much of a Shmup, it's more like a puzzle game and i like that.
In other games like DDP the chain routes are usually very obvious. I never had to think more than lets say 5-10mins for a good chaining route.

I have never played Radiant Silvergun yet myself so I can not compare. Personally, I could care less which is better. I have played MANY shmups that top ikaruga. I am told ikaruga is a stripped down Radiant Silvergun, and by that statement I can believe that Radiant can't touch many other shmups I have played.
Personally I find Border Down, Under Defeat, ESPgaluda, DoDonPachi all much much much better than Ikaruga could ever hope to be. Ikaruga seems more like a well made flash game(look at the file size) than a well made shump. There isn't much to ikaruga as all you do is switch colors and shoot the opposite color while trying not to die. I love treasure so I am in no way trying to put them down...but I feel Ikaruga is more hype than anything.

Just dont hate it before you play it, because you will convince yourself not to like it even if you do. RS is a benchmark in shmups as well as many other good games out there.
Also im starting to believe comparing the two titles is pointless. I never thought Ika was a "Spiritual Sequal" to RS despite what is displayed on the splash screen. They are two separate entities entirely.
RS and Ikaruga are two fine games in there own right.

I will take your advice. I will aquire it some day as I stated earlier...but its not a huge must have want for me. I will pick it up when I have the $$ for it laying arround or if I can get a fair trade going to get it. I do and will keep an open mind on RS. To me its more about direction and atmosphere than score systems, and thats why I love RS so much. Its an incredible thrill ride that just feels exciting as you go through it, and the music perfectly suits everything going on and adds to the dramatic feel of it all.
That doesn't mean I don't play it for score though, of course I do. I think its about as fun as the Ikaruga system, they're both so similar anyway - I couldn't care less if you 'have to let certain enemies go'
Batrider is the best shooting game ever.
