Annual Top 10 of the Less Experienced - Discussion Thread
Think of this as the pre-season exhibition, or the juniors.
My goal is not to overshadow the Top 25, but to make it even better. By having the less experienced vote in preliminaries, it will reduce the temptation to vote in the Top 25 when one isn't really widely and deeply experienced. Let's face it, most of us haven't played 95% of the Top 25, 90% of the Honorable Mentions, and 50-65% of the The Rest. This way everyone else gets to have their say too.

Using oxtsu's stickied arcade list:
Death Smiles
Muchi Muchi Pork!
Otomedius
Raiden IV
Shooting Love 2007: Exzeal & Shooting Skill Test
So i just need 2007 console shmup releases.

Those doing the Top 25 can skip this one if they like. It's not necessary tho, i don't want anyone who votes in this one to feel like they shouldn't then do the Top 25. This is more informal so it's not a big deal.

I think that's a mistake and voters should have to choose between the two. Those doing the Top 25 can skip this one if they like. In an ideal sense i agree with you, as the title says, this poll is for the less experienced. However, i don't want to be too strict about it, self-exclusion is fine. I figure that in no time the vast sea of 'less experienced' voters will completely drown the rest out to statistical insignificance anyway. However if this ends up with 60 people that also vote in the Top 25 and 40 that don't, i'll definitely have to re-think the rules.

Hehe my list is basically my favorites from last year's top 45 that are MAMEable. With the cherry on top, the game i grew up with: Raiden. It won't be long that Raiden will be kicked off my throne tho, but probly not in time for this year's vote.

I don't know about best ever, but I do think it's awesome. I've never been able to get into the Darius games myself, but I can understand their appeal.FIL wrote:I don't mean to brag but this is the best list you will ever see.
1 Dragonblaze
2 Battle Bakraid
3 Strikers 1945 II
4 Dodonpachi
5 Gunbird 2
6 Soldier Blade
7 Darius Gaiden
8 Shikigami no Shiro 2
9 G.Darius
10 Final Soldier

That's what's fun with this poll, it's ludicrously quirky, and worthless if you seek objectivity (the Top 25 is good for that). Less widely experienced player's lists are based on a microcosm, a map of the random, personal path they've taken through shmups.
I've only touched about 75 shmups in my entire life, and of those about 20 to any depth at all. That doesn't give me many choices to vote for.
As for VP1, admittedly the 100% scoring system can be irritating, but i really enjoy the game. I'm pretty anal, when i play shmups i try to kill every single enemy and collect every item, so even the downside is a decent fit for me. As for large hitbox, i did place Raiden at #1 so i'm not overly averse to them.

Im waiting until next year to vote as I freely admit that my experience is so void of...well, experience.
Ive played most of the games listed thru ROMs etc but all I can really say about 'em is they are 'WOW' lookin' & hard as hell to not get killed early on.
So by next year I fully intend to have my own top 10 ready to go!

Agreed, i'm just trying to minimize non-standard formatting to avoid too many problems. E.g. Macaw didn't put a space at his #10, it's hard to account for every little thing like that when coding, and if 200 ppl vote every such detail adds easily avoidable work. Anyways it's not really a big deal.

Up to you but this is meant for people such as yourself with little experience. I can understand tho if you can't even reach 10.

Heh my top 10 is all verts. As for your idea, kind of unnecessary: once the full list is compiled you can just extract the 10 most popular verts, horzis or whatever you want. For example, the top 10 verts from last year's Top 25 are:
Code: Select all
Game Score 2005 2004 2003 "2002"
[01] Dodonpachi (ARC/PS1/SAT) 6.815 . . . .
[03] Battle Garegga (ARC/SAT) 6.46 + * + +
[04] Armed Police Batrider (ARC) 5.89 * + * *
[05] Ikaruga (ARC/DC/GC) 5.81 - - - -
[06] Radiant Silvergun (ARC/SAT) 5.42 - - . +
[07] Raiden DX (ARC/PS1) 5.28 + + * *
[08] ESPGaluda (ARC/PS2) 4.67 + + * *
[09] Shikigami no Shiro 2 / Castle Shikigami 2 (ARC/PS2/DC/GC) 4.59 - + * *
[10] Dodonpachi Daioujou (ARC/PS2) 4.55 + + + *
[13] Rayforce / Layer Section (et al) (ARC/SAT) 4.17 + - - *Edit: And the top 10 horzis were:
Code: Select all
Game Score 2005 2004 2003 "2002"
[02] Gradius V (PS2) 6.812 . + * *
[11] Border Down (ARC/DC) 4.40 + * * *
[12] Thunderforce III (GEN/SAT) 4.38 - - - -
[14] Gradius Gaiden (PS1) 4.130 . - + +
[18] R-Type Delta (PS1) 3.90 . + * *
[23] Einhänder (PS1) 3.61 - + * *
[24] Thunderforce IV / Lightening Force (GEN/SAT) 3.58 . - + -
[26] R-Type 3.55
[30] Thunderforce V 3.03
[31] G.Darius 2.99
