Super famicom RGB on pal TV woes

Post by grovsnus »

I've asked this on a Swedish shmup forum. Got some tips, but problem persists.

When my TV is displaying a lot of bright colors, like in the konami splash screen, the picture warps and flickers. As title suggests, I'm running an SFC via RGB on my CRT PAL set.

I've tried installing resistors in the cable to no avail. I've tried different cables. I've tried adjusting the contrast and brightness via the remote. I've run out of ideas.

My final idea was to order a proper 100v stepdown adapter, but I havent received it yet, and frankly, it does seem farfetched that 110v input would cause this.

Has anyone else had this problem, or know if there is something I can do to fix it? My other japanese consoles via RGB work fine.

Have you only tried installing resistors in the RGB wires or have you also tried to lower the sync/video voltage?

No advice, but I've seen this plenty of times with the Neo Geo running through RGB. My friend's portable Sony trinitron didn't handle the white Neo intro screen at all well. The image would bend in at the top right.

I have not tried to lower the sync/video voltage. I am ready to try it, though. How many ohms would be about right for this?

I'm running an ntsc-j neo geo via rgb on the same tv, and it works like a charm. Perfect picture. So I guess it has to be something about the sfc's output that is off in some way.

Thanks, guys. This is really bugging me, and I don't think my tv likes it either.

I think this is normal. Try it on different TV's before adjusting or adding/replacing things.

To hell with this I said as I rushed out and bought a new TV. It's a Sony 29KV-X5E, and it's the greatest thing I've seen. No problems with the SFC anymore. No problems with anyhting. I can't understand how I put up with the shitty picture on my old TV. Best thing is I can adjust geometry settings by entering a code via the remote. No more screwing tiny screws deep within the TV. I'm happy.

well how was the flickering ?

I have also a Sony Trinitron but only a 15".

my sfc was flickering too but only with couple of games. Then I've changed the SFC with a RGB modified SFC (cable built in). I still got the same problem...

Its so strange. I mean it can't be the tv, ive tested on several ones. I got the best SFC picture quality but some games still flicker.

Games that do flicker: Mario Kart, Parodius 1995.

I'm using a PAL AC Adapter from the SNES. I mean that can't be the problem as the output for the SFC is always the same.

A bit hard to describe the image problems, but I'll try. The image would misplace itself, like jump down and to the right maybe four inches. It would move a little back and forth at a high frequency, so it looked like double vision. The edges would bend and curve. There was also a lot of horizontal shearing going on where the darker parts of the image would be, like sprites or the konami logo.

This ocurred for me whenever there were lots of light colors on screen. Level four in popntwinbee was unplayable. All the konami intros were horrible. Bombing in area88 was something I didnt want to do.

This was something in the signal from the SFC that my old tv couldn't handle, but my new one is fine with it. The new one doesn't display these colors overly bright either, it's just white. I havent tried any other tv, because I couldnt locate another that accepted RGB via scart.

I don't have the games you mention. Is your flicker about the same as mine?

PS. The stepdowner didn't help the picture, but it did make it so that my consoles don't get as warm as they used to. Thats good I guess.

Edit: I would like to know if resistors on sync/video would have worked, but I just cant be bothered to solder that stuff now.

I don't think we have the same flickering... its more like the image was going to slow over the screen and you se a black tear.

I wonder if it has anything to do with dirty (used) cartridge contacts...
