Ikaruga is awesome but sucks compared to Radiant Silvergun

Post by Macaw »

Because I feel like making a thread about popular shooters for once.

RS: Insane level of creativity, exceptionally well designed stages, dramatic and exciting like Taito shooters

Ika: Great stage design, intentionally much more minimalist than RS, but regardless the game is much more dull

I don't remember this part. Weren't they very brief intermissions between bosses? I mean, I'm sure there might've been one full stage.

The bosses and the parts between them as a whole form each stage.

Also: stage 5

i don't think you should be making claims about which games rock and which games suck, unless you can prove that you're an "expert"

I think Ikaruga is superior both for its simplicity and the ability to completely ignore score.

While there's a great deal of truth to what you say, I'm not sure you have to be an expert at a game to say how great it is.

I'm OK at both IS and IKA (not expert), and feel that places me as well as any other to have an opinion. Sure having the insight of a master lets you appreciate just how far they take the game design, but surely ordinary shmuppers opinions on the quality of a game are as important as the experts' ones? Especially as most people looking for advice will be of a fairly ordinary standard.

I just think what a game offers to a more ordinary player is as important as what it offers to the extremely skilled players.

Perhaps I'm wrong?

More on topic, I love both, but have a leaning towards IKa as it was the game that got me seriously into shmups over having a casual interest.

Ikaruga is faster and more arcadey. Silvergun is more epic and elaborate.

Ikaruga does not leave you with the only man and woman remaining to repopulate Earth. Uncle Daddy implications = yeech (Not that I wanted to be a duck, uh). Also, Dot Eating is quite fun and ironic.

I like Ikaruga more because you don't have to purposefully ignore tons of enemies to score well.
Feedback will set you free.

Ikaruga's awesomeness is not diminished by the existence of other awesome games.

Insofar as Radiant Silvergun may stroke one's inner cornea with blessed phantasms of enormousness, each with singular purpose to destroy one who succumbed to its nefarious stratagem; these apparitions are largely absent from the comparatively somber Ikaruga. In choosing to not pursue the erstwhile flight of rugged guardians--highwaymen to the careless player--one may lose sight of the alchemy of careful ingredients and sum the title as less spectacular. But it is in the crafty subterfuge of this imbalance that the machinations eventually make themselves known. For one title, it is a struggle to keep apace of the onslaught of specialized foes. For the other, it is an unfurling ballet. The structure of the former is plain to see, but the structure of the latter, with its masked and presumably disposable actors, reveals itself only through time and delays its anagnorisis almost until curtain.

That Iuchi plies his craft well cannot be denied, but this author cannot admit to gaining much jubilation or elucidation through his works.

I prefer Ikaruga to RSG mainly because an Ikaruga full run lasts not more than 25 minutes, while RSG (arcade mode) gets to 50 minutes pretty easily. I like that you have to push everything in a short time.

If you are saying the game is dull, you might as well said (or try to say) what you found dull, to develop the conversation a bit (the same difference than between "the game xxx sucks" and "I hate the game xxx"). Such statements could also avoid people attacking each others.

Anyway, I think Randorama's "Ikaruga is faster and more arcadey. Silvergun is more epic and elaborate" quote sums it all. I haven't played much RS but from what I've seen, they do seem to be very different games. RS do seem to be richer, overall (longer, many weapons, XP systems...and so probably much more possibilites. Again, I haven't played it much).
I was never bored playing Ikaruga, because there are just too many things to do at the same time (survival + score, and the scoring has to be done fast)...[/b]

Agreed. I like the look of RSG quite a bit more, but that's about the only thing I like better about it.
