What would you call the first modern shmup, the game that holds up gameplay wise and could have been relesed today (obviously with updated graphics and sound).
My vote goes to Zanac.
Manic gameplay, powerful weapons, brutal AI.
It's a shame Compile Heart isn't revisiting it's old franchises (or at least in spirit, since I can imagine most of them are stuck in license-hell).

Yeah, prob Zanac or Recca. Obviously this is a potentially contentious issue as to what characteristics define 'modern', but I see these two games as being fine examples of being early modern shooters.

Raiden is as modern as Raiden 3. Which is to say it isn't.

What the heck is a "modern" shoot 'em up?
Of course, that's just an opinion.

Omega Fighter. Why you even ask?

The first modern shmup will be the next one out.
Also, older games can be just as fun as newer ones, if you spend enough time to get into them and learn their quirks.

Recca for me, or maybe Batsugun, in terms of a first to hold up to your standard of 'modern' playability.
But modern is such an arbiatry term.
It could mean from the last year or 50 years.

I'll flow with Zanac. It was a giant leap from shmups like River Raid and Asteroids.

Hey, can anyone tell me what was the first good shmup?
Also, what was the first beautiful shmup?
First shmup with complex scoring?
