Space Manbow 2 ...

Post by Shatterhand »

A dutch MSX group is making a "sequel" to Space Manbow. For the MSX.

Of course they probably have no rights from Konami to do so, and they shouldn't mess with a classic like this.

There's a video preview, if anyone is interested in watching this...

The preview doesn't look much like Space Manbow to me. I understand that this is a very early preview, but art and level design are very inferior to the original. I think they really shouldn't mess with a classic like this and rather come up with their own ideas.

Exactly my opinion. I am discussing this with some guys in a brazilian shmups community in Orkut.

They are really cheering this, while I think it's really messed up. From a technical point of view, the game looks incredible, with smooth horizontal scroll and vertical scroll at the same time. But the level design is really very uninspired.

They may end up with a tech-demo which doesn't play really well, like Sonyc.

Damn you Shatterhand for the misleading topic title. :(
My hard missed a few beats reading that one. ;)

Anyway it's nice to see people making shmups for the MSX still, but saying you making the sequel to Space Manbow not only is misleading (as it isn't as it can only be inspired it since the don't own any rights to the ip) it also sets the expectation standard so high that your effort will almost always fall short of it.

Official sequel please!+

Well, they are calling it "Space Manbow 2", so my thread title isn't completely misleading :)

There was a shmup made last year for the MSX (the title is "Universe *something*".. I forgot the name), which was pretty good (Though not very technically impressive).. and it was probably the 3rd horizontal shmup in history to scroll from left to right :)

Wouldn't it have been great if Z-Out had been called "R-Type 3", and Menace had been called "Salamander 2"? :-|

I can't see getting worked up about some developers making a fan-game based on an old 8-bit title. If they wanna make Space Manbow 2, more power to 'em.

more power to em, but like the others. manbow is best left unmessed.

and my objection is more for them than manbow. this going to get a lot of criticism simply because of the name. if they made it an original title, seems the reception would be a fair bit better. :)
I have no sig whatsoever.

Well, it got released:

The "You can save the game but we are going to kick your ass for it" feature seems to be pretty interesting, but overall the game doesn`t seem too hot, like we already previewed.

Oh, and I've been out for a while, as I am marrying, and also I've begun working (temporarily) in another town, which means I have nearly zero free time. I miss hanging out here, but I hope I'll be back soon :)

Also, would also like to congratulate Shatterhand with his impending wedding.

Haha, that sounds like "impending doom" ;)

(Impending has a negative connotation.)
