joystick idea

Post by D »

Why don't 'they' make a joystick for home use that you can sit on your legs.
I'm thinking of a shape that consists of 2 curves so that they will sit better on your lap. one curve for each leg. Is that an idea? why are these not available? Or how about an add-on for joysticks?
Is this a dumb idea?

some people sit down legs crossed, also thigh sizes vary lot. maybe it there was some kind of foam or beanbag so it could old itself to it (like you see on dinner trays) I dont see why this would not work in theory.

You mean like they make them for steering wheels now? I have one of those wheels & its really difficult to use as the balance is all off & the wheel is not in a comfortable position.

Maybe a stick would be better suited tho. Sort of like an actual flight stick although if youre sitting on the brace, the stick would have to be really close to your crotch & again it seems an uncomfortable position to be Shmupping from for any length of time...

Another Idea that might go with this one-

an ergonomic joystick-- where the stick and the buttons are about two feet apart (like your arms). With a drink and sandwich tray right in the middle (just kidding about the food).

I used to have a sit down cab with that config and it felt very comfortable. The next one I make will be like that for sure.

A stick like that could go right over your legs and rest on the couch either side of you.

It's an idea, but not something I think is entirely necessary. I always use my Hori RAP with it rested on my lap and it never moves about or feels uncomfortable. I guess it's just the right size and weight, for me at least.

How about a base, with curved underside and flat top, onto which you place the stick? That way it can be used with different sticks, and it would be cheaper to buy or make yourself.

My ghetto tate set-up is quite laughable, but I have a tiny chair for a four year old and then two cardboard boxes (filled with weights an ex girlfreind made me by that I never lifted once (for rigidity), and covered in some cloth to make them look nicer), on top of which goes my stick. Sounds dumb, but it's super comfy, and works well with every stick I have. And you can sit right up close to the screen with the boxes between your legs for that 'big screen' feel. Makes my 32" feel about 50".

So that is my innovative stick mod. Cardboard boxes!

Wheels need it because the force feedback needs to push back against something. I find that even a not-so-huge stick (Agetec) sits quite nicely on my lap. I tried it on the lap attachment for the Logitech Driving Force, and it would probably be okay if it were stabilised, but it isn't worth the trouble.

A table is still a better option if you can manage it. I have a small plastic one (~1m*0.5m) with legs like an ironing board - it works beautifully for my sticks, driving force pro, drummania controller, and most likely the beatmania controller in the mail. If you can't find one like that, a keyboard stand with a wooden plank over it should do equally well. Also a good place to put my laptop if I need to consult stuff while playing games on my TV.
