Non-Japanese shmups?

As much as I like Japanese shmups; sometimes the engrish, giant humanoid robots, and anime sluts get to me. I know of Defender or Asteroids, but most games back then always involved going around and shooting shit. Also they're old, I'm sick of playing them.

If that's your only problem, there are tons of Japanese shmups without engrish, giant humanoid robots, or anime sluts. And isn't going around and shooting shit what shmups are all about?

That's not the case, but giant humanoid robots and anime sluts are in the minority and are much more of a recent trend.
Try R-Type or Gradius, and work your way up from there.

Raiden DX keeps engrish, robots and sluts to a bare minimum (as do most things with "Raiden" in the title). Rayforce is much the same, as is Under Defeat. PCB / PS1 || PCB / Sat / PS2 / Xbox || and DC respectively.

This is going by a very loose and rather denigrating definition of the term, as UD's pilots seem like very nice young ladies to me. But that pink hair might be a step too far for some, rofl.

Back to the subject at hand, no developers ot publishers in the Western world believe there is a market for these types of shooting games, and wouldn't know how to make one if they wanted to, even without looney toon sluts and giant political robots and broken Japanese speak....

Concerning the subject: It seems the OP is looking for a different 'theme' on the genre and assumes that these themes are only available from non-Japanese developers...

there's also those life-meter based PC shmups(tyrian, raptor...), but I don't think anyone would wanna play that *CRAP* anymore.
