I stumbled over this thread having just bought a Dreamcast (my first!) off of eBay for £10. - For those of you not from the UK this is about the same cost as a bucket of KFC. As such, it doesn't really matter if the console only has a couple of decent shmup's - if you're into the genre it seems silly (for these prices) not to have one!

Bring on Bangai-o, Rez and ... well, I'm sure something to have some fun with!

For me, the Dreamcast offers much more than just shooters =/

However, Gunbird 2, Zero Gunner 2, Ikaruga, and Mars Matrix alone make the system worth owning for me. Triggerheart, Radirgy, and Under Defeat aren't bad either, but nothing terribly special.

What the Dreamcast lacked in quantity it made up for in quality.

Both Giga Wing games were pretty good. Mars Matrix was f'ing phenomenal. Border Down was also complete amazing, though the art in it was severely lacking (but the gameplay more than made up for it, especially if you're into scoring mechanics).

Ikaruga was really good too. I personally didn't like it so much because, to me, its pretty much a gimped Radiant Silvergun, but there's enough different so that some people prefer it, and thats cool.

I don't like Psikyo at all, but Gunbird 2 was pretty neat at the time.

Also has Trigger Heart Excelica, which I found quite awesome.

Not such a big fan of Under Defeat, Psyvarier 2, Shikigami no Shiro 2, or the Milestone games though. Trizeal was fun for a little bit though.

I own both and have played neither ^_^ That's what I get for buying too many games all at once when I first got into the Dreamcast. I've heard good things about both though. Shenmue is less likely to get played than Jet Grind Radio though. I have a hard time starting up games that I know for a fact will take me a while to complete. It's like I don't want to make that much of a commitment to a video game.

Probably why I play shooters so much 8)

And Chu Chu Rocket and Phantasy Star Online. Feel free to shoot me at any time. (You'll probably miss from annoyance.)

I've actually never played either of those.
