Mushihimesama PS2 Bug

Post by Motorherp »

First off, dont worry this isn't another "Mushi wont save my scores" thread :P

Anyway I've been practicing the various stages of mushi a lot recently to improve my chaining which involves a lot of level restarting and I've repeatedly noticed a little bug. Occationaly immediately after a restart an enemy will move onto the screen which should have been present at the moment just before you restarted. I imagine what's going on is, just before a new enemy gets added to the game it first gets put into a buffer for addition and it seems that when the level restart takes place this buffer doesn't get wiped. Hence any enemies in the buffer get added out of place at the start of the level after the restart.

Mostly its just pop-corn style enemies you notice getting added out of place, but with good timing and lots of patience you can also trap the mid-bosses with this bug. Its a lot of fun trying to navigate a level as normal with the additional presence of the mid-boss spamming you to death :D . Wish I could catch a video of it to show you but its very hard to recreate on demand since you have to restart the exact frame when a new enemy is getting added to the game. Particularly hard if you're trying to catch a specific enemy. Think I'd have to rig up some kind of frame counter to catch this on video without relying on luck, though I've no idea how I'd do that.

Just wondering if anyone else has noticed this? Also can anyone confirm whether this also happens on the Mushi PCB or is it just a PS2 port bug?

I've had this happen as well, only with popcorn though. But I have seen a video of stage 5 where he fights the mid-boss and end-boss at the same time IIRC. Pretty crazy stuff, probably have it lying around somewhere.
I doubt there's a restart option on the PCB so it's probably ps2 only.

I noticed this once or twice but it turned out my addled brain believed I had restarted when in fact I hadn't. As I recall, there's a noticeable delay between hitting start and the menu becoming selectable. If you hit start again, returning to the game, the music starts over so you might think you have restarted the stage when you haven't. When it first happened to me I thought it was a bug, so I quickly restarted again. The next time, I realised I was simply being shit. :)

I barely touch practice mode on Mushi anyway, since it's more frustrating for me than lifeing it to the ST4 midboss, then dropping my chain and losing two lives in rapid succession. 3 credits, then turn the bitch off for another month.

Yeah, this has happened to me many times. It looks really funny when you spawn enemies that are supposed to be on a cliff.

I can confirm it does not happen on the PCB as there is no restart option nor any practice modes.

I'd noticed it too, but never though of using it to intentionally create a level-spanning mid-boss. Cunning idea indeed, but does it really happen enough for you to have a chance at making it a regular occurance? I'd love to do it. How many times/how frequently have you succeeded in popping up an out of place mid-boss?

Its difficult to do, you cant really make it an 'on demand' thing sadly. With popcorn enemies it happens to me all the time, but capturing a mid-boss I've only suceeded a few times and mostly that was by accident.

Yeah, this totally hasn't been done a million times before.

Oh, and the "stage 5 boss appearing early" thing has been around since the port of Mushihimesama to PS2. I remember reading about it somewhere in 2005, but I didn't see it until that video posted up there by that guy.

I see. Not likely I'll make it happen without a little effort! Gonna give it my best shot though!

With regards to this stuff cropping up ages ago - so what? I wasn't on these boards in 2005 so this is helpful and interesting to me, and others I'm sure.

We talk about real old games here all the time right? And I'm sure that stuff's been said before. Of course we don't want to regurgitate or plagiarise ideas, but there's always space for re-discussion. And being nice to each other!

Yah. I use practice mode frequently and this "bug" has come up, which really distracts me at the beginning of a run, do I tell you! It seems to occur after many frequent restarts when I'm screwing up right in the beginning of the stage and get aggrivated and restart right away. And also through repetition of above mentioned act it happens. Just restart a stage a bunch of times repeatedly and I'll bet you'll see it happen.

That's my hunch.

I had a dream that I was playing a projected PSP screen of mushihime sama on an arcade cabinet at a circus I was employed it. Mushihime-sama!!!

This is the sort of thing that creeps me out when I'm going through a bout of Stage 1 Restart Frenzy in any shooter.

Nice video. The bug (lol) is pretty common. I'll try to catch a scorpion at the beginning of stage 2 one day :)
