Hello.Question...

Post by Octopod »

Hello,

I recently been finding myself interested in this genre of video games but i have no experience with anything newer than snes releases...well almost. You see i DLed blue wish resurection and gave it a couple plays.
I wasnt ready for what happened, bullets everywhere...fast bullets. But they arent hitting me.So many bullets i cant tell what in the hell is going on but im not getting hit.Im just randomly weaving around the bottom of the screen holding the fire button and i could swear i should have had my ship blown up so many times yet i make it to the level 1 boss before i get hit.
I guess this is a "bullet hell' game? Now i know im not good at the game so what gives? Are all the newer space shooters like this? Its almost like the game just looks crazy hard with all the bullets yet they dont seem to be any trouble to avoid.Does blue wish resurection suck or am i missing something? And no i didnt make it much farther than 2nd lvl so im not saying you can just walk through the game but...why are the bullets so easy to avoid by just moving about at random? And yes i realize you have "guards" that block some but still...

Edit:Ok i just watched a youtube video and it was nowhere near as fast.Maybe my settings are off or something.....heh.

I got into shmups again after a long hiatus last year, and like you, I was overwhelmed at first. But don't panic, the principle is pretty simple: almost all modern shmups have a "hitbox" which is a small area around the middle of your ship/sprite where you can get hit. Some shmups show it visually, others don't.

It's just a technique to get more stuff going on onscreen without making the game impossible. Granted, they could have just made the ship look smaller, but there's not as much appeal in controlling a tiny square.

Some tips for getting started: don't constantly look at what your shooting, but try keep an eye on the area slightly in front of and around your ship. Look for gaps in the onslaught of bullets, and maneuvre into them. Most of these games are playtested extensively, so there are always gaps, it's not impossible.

have fun!

Play Blue Wish Resurrection on Heaven mode. It's pretty easy and it should be a good starting point to get your skills up.

You're way ahead, some people still haven't figured this out.

Turn off autobomber. It's much more fun that way, and bombs are more effective when you fire them manually.
And as auryn already mentioned, in BWR your plane is indestructible apart from few pixels on the center. If you didn't turn it off in settings, those should blink when you hold down fire (main shot, not autofire).

The bullets themselves are also smaller than they appear: usually they have an inner (darker/lighter) contour that can give you a hint on the actual size of a bullet. I think it was DDP that started the trend on drastically reducing bullet hitboxes (well, whatever, actually).

Autobomber? It seems to only function when i press the button. Is it not turned off by default?I see what you mean with the hitbox, the yellow...blip..in the center of the ship? And the bullets have them too?Well im glad the bullets are easy to see, in old 8 and 16 bit shooters it seems like i always die from some slow rear approaching bullet i didnt even see comming.

Autobomber is a function that drains a bomb instead of life count when you get hit. Obviously, when you run out of bombs and get hit, you lose a life as usual. It's enabled by default, but it hurts score somewhat.
