buying a japanese ps3

Post by muell67 »

Im looking to get a japanese ps3 mainly for the fact that I can get a white one. Besides not being able to play us dvd's on it are there any other downsides to getting this instead of a us one? Blu ray movies and games are region A in both the us and japan so both us and japanese games should play on a japanese ps3 correct.

blu ray dvds will be fine either way. just no US support for dvds and ps2 games....
Damn Tim, you know there are quite a few Americans out there who still lives in tents due to this shitty economy, and you're dropping loads on a single game which only last 20 min. Do you think it's fair? How much did you spend this time?

DVD is region 2, as you correctly pointed out.

If you get PS2 compatible model, it will be NTSC/J compatible only.

PS1 is also NTSC/J only compatible.

Blu is 100% compatible with US discs.

PS3 titles are region free.

They have universal power supplies, so don't worry about that.

Thats it.

Some games force you into a region when playing online.

If you buy Motorstorm on USA region, you will play against Americans and Canadians. If you buy the European version you will play against Europeans.

I am not sure if Japan has its own region like that.

But basically, buy the disc in the region you want to play in.

I am not sure if this is exclusive to Motorstorm or not. But better safe than sorry.

that white one, 40GB I thought that that doesn't even have bc.
So no ps2 games. But it does play ps1 right? Please look into that if it even matter to you. As for dvd's, just make a backup of your favorite dvd and that backup dvd will play fine. Welcome to this crazy world.

I've been looking for one too, but Play-asia only has the 40gig. The lack of BC is a deal breaker for me.

I'll just stick to my original plan and get a Japanese PS2.

I already have a japanese ps2. I really need a us ps2. I probably should get a us 80gb so I can play us ps2 games but that white would look so cool in my entertainment center with all the other white consoles.

For muell67,

Nope, it only applies to if you were to buy either the 80GB or 40GB version PS3 console here in the USA. Sony requires the PS3 UPC code cut out + paid receipt as proof of actually buying one to get the five free Blu-Ray movie disc offer. ^_~

It's possible that the movies you select for the above free promotional offer won't be the ones you'll be getting so do provide alternative movie titles just in case that situation does happen -- it all depends on their remaining Blu-Ray movie disc stock inventory at the wherehouse level... ^_~

They do seem to phasing out the backwards compatible Jap PS3's:

So if you want a bc one, act fast!
