Forgot to reply to this:
It's not a racing game, but its sense of speed is similar to that of a racing game (more swoopy than twitchy, for lack of better terms).
Going as fast as you can is almost always a Bad Idea. SpooN has a good synopsis in the high score thread.shiftace wrote:Maybe I just don't get the game. It's unplayable if you try to go at full speed, because you can't even see anything; so you have to go slower, maybe speculate that when there's simple enemies then you can go extra fast until the next pattern change without much risk of dying in a flash. Does that even work? I dunno, it never did a lot for me, and the game always felt like 95% luck, 5% skill or so. Entirely possible that it's all my fault, but my experience was still that it's no fun.
Also, racing game on a random course? Doesn't sound right.

Alright, I tried Torus Trooper again, and "unplayable" is too harsh, but I still don't like it. Going slow and charge-shooting works; and if you die too many times and the timer gets low then sprinting to the next boss can save you, so there's still a good use for super high speed. I had a bunch of lousy runs, a few decent ones, and then I got sick of it in a hurry. Some combination of: it starts off slow; the only dodging I could ever pull off was really simple leading and tapping; and charging blindly through everything and taking a lower score is still more fun than playing "properly." Maybe I'd like it more if I didn't suck as much. I do like it now a bit more than I did two days ago, at least.
So yeah. It's a borderline shmup, it's fast, and it is possible to like it.
