My two favorites are to be honest Sega Rally, and Daytona on Saturn. People keep telling me ones that are better than those have been released...there doesn't seem to be any general consensus as to classics in the genre though. Which ones should I try? Doesn't have to be on Saturn.
Others I've liked:
Power Drift (pce)
Road Rash 3 (Genesis...this game owns!)
Outrun 2 for Xbox
Saturn sega ages Outrun
I thought Sega GT on Xbox, Daytona and Sega Rally on the DC were not that great, unless there's some element of greatness that I'm missing.

Midnight Club 3. Racing through open cities is much more interesting than closed circuits with dull handling.

Right here at some local arcades in Oklahoma City. The Daytona 2 cabinet is the big-screen version, except dual station for 2-player, like this:Neon wrote:You bastard-Daytona USA 2
-Super GT (Scud Race). I've been wanting to try these for the longest time...mame runs Scud Race at about 1 fps

Where do you play them at? Might have to make a pilgrimage...

Super GT is the 2-player version as well:

There's an F355 Challenge and a few Outrun 2 machines locally too.
It might be worth the trip.

Because I'm also a BIG fan of racing games check these out:
X-BOX
PROJECT GOTHAM RACING 2..best online racer..also has a hidden shmup in it!
RALLY SPORT CHALLENCE 2..great handling a very nice looking game!
BURNOUT 3..arcade racing as it should be!
FORZA MOTORSPORT..beats GT4.(release 12 may)
RACE DRIVER 2..realistic handling and lots of different racing classes.
OUT RUN 2..fun but very limited, only 15 stages!
NFS 2 UNDERGROUND..show your own ride online..it's like the TFaTF movies!

As I've mentioned way too many times before, Crazy Taxi is my favorite racing game. I haven't found any other racing games that I have nearly as much fun with.
Granted, the only other racing games I've played in the past few years were F-Zero GX and Burnout 2, and neither of those impressed me all that much.

Need For Speed V: Porsche Unleashed.
Favorite racing game ever
After that the series went to shit (though HP2 on PS2 was ok)
Motor City Online was actually better in pretty much every way other than graphics, but since that was a MMO and since it's impossible to play anymore, it's not really work mentioning until someone dedicated enough decides to make a stand-alone server. Fuck EA in the ass for turning that game into an MMO and killing it off to support Sims Online.

It was nice to hear that they're tweaking various aspects of the game that people complained about in the demo...

You really shouldn't judge a game before you play it... I've got very little doubt that it'll be better than Gran Turismo 4 (not like that's very hard), but you should still hold off from making any final judgments until the final version of the game comes out.SPACE HARRIER wrote: FORZA MOTORSPORT..beats GT4.(release 12 may)

I love ingame advertising, it adds a lot to the immersion of a game if it's done right (remember those Red Bull ads in Wipeout?). I can see where it could easilly go overboard (Drink the pepsi to get your health back!), but if it's something like real life advertising on a bilboard or an AMD64 screensaver on a computer, i'm all for it.theevilfunkster wrote:burnout 3 is awesome but unfortunatly it's been EAised. huge billboards for tiger woods and need for speed around every corner and that fucking awful dj guy!

And a shameless plug for the stuff I'm selling on eBay, if you're into that sort of thing.

i dont mind advertising in games, especially racing games where it can add to the reallism. its just when EA got hold of burnout 3 and decided to use it to sell their other games.I love ingame advertising, it adds a lot to the immersion of a game if it's done right (remember those Red Bull ads in Wipeout?). Still not seeing where it's a problem... I guess if the DJ says, "GO ON, BE A TIGER!" and "THIS NEXT TRACK IS BROUGHT TO YOU BY EA SPORTS....IT'S IN THE GAME!" then it'd get pretty shitty pretty quick...but just bilboards? Sounds good to me.theevilfunkster wrote:i dont mind advertising in games, especially racing games where it can add to the reallism. its just when EA got hold of burnout 3 and decided to use it to sell their other games.

Never much cared for the Saturn port of Wipeout so I never tried 2097 on Saturn...the Playstation version was good, but neither Wipeout nor Wipeout 2097 hold a candle to the badassity of Wipeout 3. Wipeout 3 is pure futuristic racing perfection, and one of my favorite racing games ever.Diabollokus wrote:What about that sequel to wipeout on the saturn wipeout 2027 0r 40 something, it was pretty cool back in the day with its speed and trimming with r and l triggers
...but I strongly doubt I'll ever love a racing game as much as Motor City Online or Porsche Unleashed

I'm going to haveta' try Porsche Unleashed one of these days, Roush.
I'm a huge fan of EA and their racing games...advertisments or not. I have all the NFS's except for that one...(?)
ALso, GET Tokyo Extreme Racer 2&3 (PS2 only) One of the few racers that NEVER gets boring!
NFS Hot Pusuit 2(PS2), hasn't gotten enough praise here...its the cats ass!

couldn´t agree more, and would include all the Burnout/Need for Speed/Rally Sport Challenge games, too.judesalmon wrote:Isn't a racing game.oxtsu wrote:Personal favorite racing games, and most relevant today...

If you want Burnout gameplay with an actual challenge, try Speed Kings.
MSR/PGR/PGR2 are unbelievable, Wipeout 2/3, Daytona, Crazy Taxi, Race Driver 2, Sega Rally, Colin McRae and Waverace 64 are great racing games. Outrun 2 doesn´t hold a candle to Daytona or Sega Rally, but Outrun 2 SP (arcade only) is a lot more interesting, mainly because it had wind shadow drafting.

If you exclude Burnout and the others you should exclude Crazy Taxi as well! Though being a nice game it isn't really a racing game (as in racing against other cars... since you're racing against time here...).raiden wrote:couldn´t agree more, and would include all the Burnout/Need for Speed/Rally Sport Challenge games, too.judesalmon wrote:Isn't a racing game.oxtsu wrote:Personal favorite racing games, and most relevant today...

you´re right of course, my criterium was just whether they are challenging, but from a conservative point of view, Crazy Taxi would be the first of all games mentioned to drop off the "racing game" list.If you exclude Burnout and the others you should exclude Crazy Taxi as well! I like racing games for what they share with shmups: being challenging and always offering room for skill improvement. Not an RPG style improvement of car engine or flashy spoilers, not a means to tell a story (although Race Driver 2 is guilty of that, too), and not a superficial thing which can be fully understood in the first playing session.
