I'm curious because this theory keeps cropping up that owners of undumped PCBs only own them because 1) they like to be leet and 2) they can't play them emulated, and I was under the impression that's BS created by envoius fools and we'd want the real thing anyway.
So, say Ketsui got mamed tomorrow...

...how many of you would sell your PCBs?

Considering that the "buttery hoarders of games that don't ever play them and their crabs flare up when they get emulated" problem is prevalent in pretty much every other emulation facet it is actually a reasonably safe assumption. Not to imply that they're the majority, but they do exist practically everywhere.

Those who like playing the game won't sell them. The collectors who see their games as an 'investment' and aren't interested in the game itself but just its resale value will probably get rid of them. Which is good because that means the game might fall into the hands of somebody who actually wants to play it.

I'm 100% cool with emulation as long as it doesn't hurt the developer. Is Cave still trying to sell copies of Ketsui PCB? Due to it's rarity, I'm guessing no. I think emulation is a win-win for players and collectors once a game is out of production and sold out.
I just don't want to see Cave get killed by it's own fans if the games start getting emulated too quickly.

I don't have Ketsui anymore, but if I did, I'd still keep it after proper emulation. If a true port came out, I'd probably sell, 'cause that's just too much money to have wrapped up in one PCB. For the same reason, I never picked up PCB's of DDP DOJ or Espgaluda. Both of those games have wonderful home ports so I really don't see owning the PCB's unless I were going for full kit collection.

I'm not saying there are collectors like that on here, i'd say that if they're here that means they like shooters enough to play with their collections, but collectors like that do exist.sven666 wrote:i think thats BS to be honest, while there certainly are such people theyre in extreme minority.

While this isn't a problem for relatively common games like Ketsui, you'd be surprised at how many games are in the Guru's wanted list just because a hoarder who has the only known surviving (copy, copies) (yes, multiple) of the PCB of the wanted game in question is taking lengths to keep emulation of the title from being realized, like cutting off auctions when someone they don't recognize makes a bid.sven666 wrote:i think thats BS to be honest, while there certainly are such people theyre in extreme minority.

i believe this statement to be fairly true.. some of the collectros who buy expensive cave pcbs don't play the games to any depth at allSuperPang wrote:...how many of you would sell your PCBs?

why buy all these well expensive pcbs and not even attempt to play them properly and extract all the goodness you possibly can???
Now i'm not saying this is the case with everyone( sven 666 ,gaijin punch ,eoj etc are all regulars in the h.s forum)
i have no problem admitting i am envious of anyone who can afford all the new pcbs!!

So you're saying its got nothing to do with desire but just ability? So only the best shmup players should own PCB's and anyone who is sub-par who owns one should sell it on?
I recently purchased a DDP PCB just because I love the game and dont really like playing on MAME. I'm still not very good at it though. At my current level I'm just not interested in trying to create the longest possible chains or finding all the bees. Therefore cause I'm not playing it to the max because I lack the skill then I shouldn't own it even though I really love playing the game anyway?

nah not at all. just some people don't even try.. or even learn scoring systems. I'm not a good player myself but at least i try and show some dedication and stick with a game for a long time before i move on to a next one(i might even SELL it when i'm done!) not just ammass a full collection for otaku bragging rights
how do you expect to get better/see more of the game if you just keep moving on and buying more shit..
theres a LOT of difference between someone like you having one pcb that you are learning and a collectro who has every single boxed cave kit but hasn't even got off teh 3rd level on nearly all of them (this is true!)

Meh I dunno. There's some games where I think I'll never get good enough to start really milking the scoring systems (DDP DOJ for example) but I still just enjoy playing them as straight forward no-frills shmups. My enjoyment of the game and desire for owning the original hasn't decreased at all because I'm not playing it in great depth. On a similar note someone might buy a Street Fighter 3 PCB but only ever play as Ryu and never attempt to parry for example. I wouldn't say that person is unfairly hogging that PCB as long as he's enjoying it.
I know what you mean though, I just think the criteria are wrong. If the PCB's are just collecting dust with no intention of ever getting played just for the sake of putting a tick on a check list then I'd agree with you.

well what about diversity, i love the fact that im able to pick almost anything off my shelf and get the full arcade experience right at home (altho id proboably give it all up to be able to have the kind of arcadeculture found in japan close to my home)charlie chong wrote: how do you expect to get better/see more of the game if you just keep moving on and buying more shit..
doesnt mean i dont play the games, altho obviously not all at once, i keep a game in the cab untill i get bored (usually a couple of credits after the 1CC) or feel like playing something else for a while.
just because a game is rare and/or expensive doesnt mean you have to play it exclusiveley all the time to fully appreciate it.
im crap at playing DDP BL for instance, i cant even 1CC it (yet) and its such a frustrating game at times that ocationally it just gets thrown out in favour of anything but DDP
or a game like garegga, takes massive commitment to play, it doesnt come around that often, proboably havent played it for 2 years, still hold it as one of the best games ever tho and wouldnt dream of selling it.

i have close to 700 games now...... all are opened and played, some more than others. i bought most of these games as they came out, not all but a good deal of them. that's why tamaru was 40.00, hyper dual 50.00 and RSG 60.00 when i got them.im not planning to sell my collection anyways, neither high nor low, I dont know why people continuously seem to think collectors dont play their stuff??
but i know good and well why folks think this with all posts i've seen about folks having sealed copies of games and keep them that way.
Damn Tim, you know there are quite a few Americans out there who still lives in tents due to this shitty economy, and you're dropping loads on a single game which only last 20 min. Do you think it's fair? How much did you spend this time?

i think people have got it twisted .I dont expect people to master games and get world record beating scores etc
it's more the people who collect just for collectings sake or because cave is known as the "hardcore" shooter company.. no doubt they glean enjoyment from the first 3 levels of the games but they also glean just as much enjoyment from brown boxes and peedo pillows so....
don't get me on garegga sven that game is my nemesis! 5 years and counting with no 1cc

For some people it's more fun to hunt down a NOS Ketsui kit than playing it.....It's their hobby...
And as said 10X before...i don't understand the drama about Ketsui here......
it is not rar and also not super expensive. I mean look how many people already own Futari or MMP or DS or PS or Futari BL or....... these did cost 1000-2200$ and some are not as good as ketsui (some pleople say this
)
so where is the problem paying 8 or 900$ for the "best cave game ever made" (some people say this
)
And you people always forget...these games are not made for home use.....
and NO i'll not sell my Ketsui Kit because MAME is the biggest shit ever

mame is wank.
also, fully agree with charlie chong on this one. there are only four scores on the ddp doj BL table, and i think there are about 8-10 people here who own it. obviously people can do as they want, but i can't help feel it's a shame when people spend more time searching for new boards/paraphenalia to buy, than playing the pile of games they already own. i will admit that i own too many games, but everything gets a regular play
for the original question, i'd keep my ketsui. mame really is wank. i own boards that are reasonably-well emulated, but i'd rather own an authentic piece of arcade gaming history, in my hands. if it does get emulated, at the end of the day, it's only money. the amount of enjoyment and entertainment i'll get out of the board isn't something i can put a £ value on

nothing says Ketsui would crash in price anyways, maybe sink a hundred or two.. just look at DDP, proboably the most common of Cave boards, even released in all regions.. the damn thing fetches +$300 these days anyways!
without any kind of proof im claiming Ketsui was produced in much lower numbers.

It's all down to how much you get out of the game compared to the money you spend for it. I spent approx $220 to get all of the Cave ports for PS2, but if they were scratched or nicked or blown up, I woud pay about $500 instantly to get them all back. Maybe more depnding on the hyperthetical situation. $0,25 a credit for Ketsui is amazing value, whatever you ended up paying for it.
