-2 screens
-unadequite D-pad
-Underpowered
-Hard to peer at bullets

....Don't get me wrong, I love my DS, but it's just not an ideal shmup platform (and the psp too, unless you have TV out).
That said, I do enjoy Gradius Galaxies and I am excited about Nanostray 2, but I'd rather play them both on my TV.
Trek trough the Galaxy on silver wings and play football online.

No. If they didn't like it, they'd just resell the board and make their money back (just like I did with Progear).
-yeah maybe you.... but at the same time I have seen LOTS who talk like sapphire is the greatest thing ever and it's not, so I have to wonder.
Damn Tim, you know there are quite a few Americans out there who still lives in tents due to this shitty economy, and you're dropping loads on a single game which only last 20 min. Do you think it's fair? How much did you spend this time?

It's not really that hard to tell how much you'd like it. If you've played some Cave games, then watch a full run of Ketsui and understand the scoring system, you'll know what's up. Basically it's a good Cave game with really cool bullet patterns and a scoring system that doesn't rely remotely as much on being able to chain every single last thing as most of their other good games.

It's only a hindrance if they are used poorly. It's not a requirement to use both screens.
-unadequite D-pad
I think you mean "inadequate". D-pad quality varies, but sometimes the stiff ones just need to be broken in. DS fat has an adequate d-pad.
-Underpowered
Underpowered compared to the latest consoles, but still more powerful than older 16 bit systems. Those handled shmups well.
-Hard to peer at bullets
The DS has a 3" screen, which is one of the bigger handheld screens. Smaller handhelds like the GBC had games with bullets that are easy to peer at, so that's no problem for the DS either.

The PSP doesn't sound bad for shmups. The new model has a better d-pad and the screen is big for a handheld. I heard the TV out doesn't take up the full screen of the TV. Wouldn't that be a hindrance for shmups that don't take up the full screen of the PSP?

Mobile phones are smaller than the DS, the controls are worse, and many of them are less powerful, but they still get more shmups. It doesn't make much sense.

Exactly, I couldn't agree more. I have a DS Lite, and I have no problems with the D-Pad; I like it a lot better then the one on the regular DS. And as far as the PSP goes, turning it vertical doesn't cause any screen issues, unlike some TV's.

I just got hold of a Phat and I (finally) have a Lite...The Phat one is clicky and not to my liking. I definately prefer the Lite's "soft-no-resistance-but-very-responsive" Control Pad as I am pretty much only able to play Contra 4 with it.

Perhaps the real issue is sweaty thumbs. If that's the case, the only real solution is to wash hands before playing with it.

I never played with a Phat, but I have no problem firing in all 8 directions on Contra 4. If the DS had some good shooters, I bet the D-pad would be adequate for those as well. I fully expect to suck at Ketsui Death label, but not because of the D-pad.

I heard that the first batch of Lites had those stiff d-pads (like the one I have) and that the later models have better ones.

I can already picture myself selling my current lite to buy a new one just for Ketsui DS and Nanostray 2.

It better be.

On another note,

I always wonder WHY in the flying heck Nintendo ever released the stupid DS "Lite".

I mean, aside from the part where they wanna take your money and eat your souls.

All I ever hear about the thing is how uncomfortable it is, and it's the wrong shape, and blahblahblahblahblah...........

I'll stick with my "fatty" version, thank you very much. No issues with that one.

Because the old model looked atrocious and the plastic felt cheap and the screens were dim and it was pretty much a crime against aesthetics.

Not long before the next announcement! I hope the new trailer that was being worked on for the last Cave fest gets shown.

My experience is the exact opposite of yours. Bought and sold a DS fat within a week of the Jap release. Hand cramp galore and too big. Unplayable in my hands.

DS lite is comfortable and fits in a pocket easily. Plus the screen is decent.

It's a side project for Mihara. That would explain the slow progress. Ah well. Still look forward to news about the new showing when it happens.

I can finally stop being a dick about the NDSLs d-pad: I sold my old one and bought a new one, which works almost perfectly. I guess it just was a (rather common) manufacturing fault.

Just a shoddy google translation for laughs:

3. KETSUI Association, February 23 (Saturday).
The parasite has also GEMAZURAUNJI Akihabara's future.
Why the B in a little mystery to consider in planning.
I propose tomorrow.
IKD IMI, and I was forced to join his message stating that the translation is,Think calmly, and the great revival of the development SOREDOKORO do not think so.
来なけれBut it is better to die.

Planning is KETSUIGARU A mystery? Invested.
Cryptic.Mysterious B project is still unknown.
This also means unknown.

For details, but the AOU day.
来なけれBut it is better to die? I hope that doesn´t mean anything bad.

Ketsui meeting on Febuary 23rd is all I can make sense of (using a translator).

Something about IKD (Ikeda) too.

"shinu ga yoi" is a DDP thing, it's on the back of the DOJ dvd case.

He's announcing the next ketsui meet (the downloadable demo thing presumably). He also said there are rumours that IKD and IMI (who?) will be coming, but it's unlikely because they'd be working on DDP daifukkatsu, but if they don't, "shinu ga yoi" (to die is good). He seems to be rambling about some surprise plans...?

IKD's post's are very stylised and pretty much babel fish proof. Lets not worry until we get a proper translation, yeah?

He doesn't say anything new or interesting in that post that he hasn't said before. That's why I didn't bother posting it.
