Axelay will always be my all time favorite shmup.

My only regret is that there will never be an Axelay 2. But everytime I go to E3 I ask Konami reps when it will happen, just to confuse the hell out of them.
Please take Comtar as needed per doctors prescription. Comtar in labortory tests can cause a 3rd eye, moderate bleeding, as well as itchy scalp. If Comtar gives you an erection for over 4 hours, seek medical help. No batteries included.

I personally like Gradius III, Soldier Blade, and Blazing Lazers. I hear Gate of Thunder is good, haven't tried it.

Totally agreement on my end. And it gives you both a hori & a vert to play.

R-Type
R-Type III
Zanac
Soldier Blade
Blazing Lazers
Super Star Soldier

Yeah, there are a bunch of good ones. My personal favorite is R-Type III. Gates of Thunder would be better if you could adjust the SFX/Music volume.

I'm going to pick up 2,000 points tonight. I'm having a hard time deciding-- I'd really like to grab Alien Soldier too. :x

Axelay! At first you may not be feeling the vert levels; the perspective that is used takes a little bit of getting used to. But once you DO get used to the perspective, I'd definitely say Axelay is the #1 most well balanced shmup on the virtual console. The OP seems like he may be new to the genre as well (forgive me if I'm wrong) and Axelay is very "1 ccable".

In short, great playability, great graphics, great atmosphere, one of the greatest 16-bit soundtracks I've ever had the pleasure of listening to, and a very well balanced difficulty level make Axelay my uncontested recommendation! (If it isn't your cup of tea though I'd go with Soldier Blade or Gate of Thunder...but who WOULDN'T love Axelay :P)

The only problem Axelay has beside low difficulty is ~two weapons being ridiculously useful and the rest being certifiably crappy

I wish I had a talent for creating music. Cause I've always loved the final level theme of Axelay... the creepy tune inside the enemy lair. But no one has ever remixed that, I think it could be an awesome but epic tune if done properly... *sigh*

Gradius III SNES is also pretty good (maybe better than the arcade version, even), but it's plagued by some pretty awful slowdown that makes it really easy. I haven't played the VC version, but it's probably still present, just because they seem to go for faithful recreation on the VC.

Haha I spent a few days lurking the board, reading old topics (interesting stuff by the way) and I realised I'd made a mistake then edited to remove the most cringe inducing bits :D .

Thanks for all the suggestions. In the end I picked up R-Type III because I remember enjoying Delta and SNES games are really nostalgic for me.
I'll probably end up trying all your suggestions in the end though.
But for the time being (my copy of Ikaruga arrived too) I have plenty to deal with.

Cool. Now with Alien, Gunstar, and Ikaruga, you have a Treasure trifecta. Enjoy.
