Playstation Shmups

Post by durias »

Okay. I'm "that close" to acquiring all the Playstation shmups that are ranked in the top 25 on this board. Now, 1cc-ing them is another issue. Grin.

Dodonpachi
Dodonpachi Daioujou
Einhänder
ESPGaluda
Gradius Gaiden
Gradius V
Mushihimesama
Raiden DX
R-Type Delta
Shikigami no Shiro 2

What would you recommend my next acquisition be? R-Type? Donpachi? Strikers 1945 II? Others?

Do you enjoy Compile shooters? Then go for Zanac X Zanac which contains Zanac Neo, the last shooter made by Compile in 2001 before the company ceased to exist.

In case you like Psykio, there are both Strikers 1945 and Strikers 1945 II for PS1. Get the Japanese versions for tate and score saving. Avoid the PS2 Strikers 1945 I+II compilation at all costs, it has ugly interlaced graphics.

Gaia Seed. Its easy as piss but just too awesome regardless. One of those games you play for the experience rather than getting a good score.

But it costs a lot.

So download an ISo, ho ho ho

Shikigami no Shiro 1 was also released on the PS2 but I cannot recommend it in any way. The game is pretty pitiful though it does provide a challenge.

R-Type Final is pretty horrible I don't recommend you get it. Mind you I'm no fan of the R-Type games but I feel Delta is better then this. On the other hand there's multiple last stages and a nice secret stage made for Delta fans which crawls at a nice 30FPS!

Gradius 3 & 4 is released on the PS2. I would get it just for 3. Gradius 4 isn't really that good but is a decent game overall.

Finally there's the Gunbird Collection which I would recommend if you love Psikyo games.

there's a funny PS2 ported doujin shmup called Fren-Ze.

If you coincidentally have it lying around nearby, try out and fail.

Well for the original Playstation there's Bokandesuyo, Parodius and Raiden Trad (for raiden 2) that are worth playing.

If you like Lock-em-ups :? youve got the Rayforce sequels too...

Homura is fun and cheap. Not my cup of tea, but I'm certainly surprised I don't see it mentioned more here.

R-type Final isn't what I would call bad. It's just that R-Type Delta is a lot better.

Sexy Parodius is quite good. Lotsa cameos of other Konami games and plays Gradius style.

Jikkyo Oshaberi Parodius is an enhanced port from the SNES original. The music is better, the graphics are better and it doesn't slow down.

Salamander Deluxe Pack Plus. It's expensive, but there's a couple games here.

G-Darius. Firing giant lasers at mechanical fish never gets old.

Just get Zanac X Zanac :D

No mention of Harmful Park? it is nice cute them up and fun playing.
Also check out Cotton 100% another cute them up -- it is remake of Super Famicom game but should come cheap on the PlayStation.

Quoted for good taste.

There is a decent port of Souky for PS1.

Seconded.

I paid $135 for a complete Zanac X Zanac and to me it was worth it. A better version of the FC Zanac with three different modes (plus no sprite flickering or slowdown) with a great sequel, priceless.

You'll know soon enough from me.

Buddy of mine was able to get it for me for 500 yen.

Raiden Project (and DX) is a must.
In The Hunt is better on the PSX than the Saturn.
R-Types for perfect ports of R-Type I and II.
Gradius Gaiden yes!
If you haven't own Wolf Fang for the Saturn, get the PS version.
Night Raid was pretty cool.

PSX port of Strikers 1945 II is better than the Saturn port, but it's still ridden with slowdown (it's really bad in stage 7 + 8 ) and framecuts.

I actually really enjoy Harmful Park, but it's pricey!

Ready for Gradius 3 & 4 and Strikers 1945 II? :)

I just finished trying Homura, Psyvariar 2 both which i didnt like much
and Shikigami 2 (which was ok) havent played it much yet.

I have some questions:

1. Is Psyvariar 1 any different to 2?
2. Is Shikagimi 1 worh getting if i like 2?
3. Why arent these Shmups 2P? Disgracefull :/

4. If i didnt like the above much are the following worth trying:

Radirgy
Trizeal
Chaos Field
XIISTAG

Thanks!

I was thinking about trying this, is it really that ugly?
Is the gameplay still ok?

Strikers 1945 on the PS1 it a good port, but has slowdown (it's really bad with two players).

I must say that Einhander was a huge letdown for me.
Some of the best shmups don't actually end in a vowel.
No, this game is not Space Invaders.

Not quite so clear-cut, there's a lot more discussion on that topic here.

As for the PS2 Strikers Collection, I think all versions of the game (at least the PAL version does) has the annoying issue of Continue-button being mapped to the fire button, which leads to accidental credit-feeding.
No matter how good a game is, somebody will always hate it. No matter how bad a game is, somebody will always love it.

The same basic "buzzing" idea is there, but the two different "versions" of Psyvariar (Medium Unit and Revision) implement it a bit differently. The overall structure is a bit simpler than Psy 2, but I personally still like them.
Is Shikagimi 1 worh getting if i like 2?
2 is definitely the superior game...while it's not terrible, I'd only recommend the first if you can get it cheap.
Radirgy
Trizeal
Chaos Field
XIISTAG
Stag and Trizeal are...okay, but nothing I'd strain myself trying to get ahold of (if you're into more "oldschool" shmups you might like them better than I did). I've played CF and Radirgy on systems other than the PS2 (not sure how those ports turned out) and generally like them, though opinions on both (especially CF) are quite split around here.

Oh, gameplay-wise is the same, but the graphics took a hit and Taito (or perhaps X-Nauts) fucked up the sound to the point of annoyance.

I really don't recommend it.
Ghegs wrote: Not quite so clear-cut, there's a lot more discussion on that topic here.
Just get the ROM and play Strikers 1945 II on MAME. It's sure as hell better than both the SS and PSX ports (and it's even better than the PS2 Strikers collection).

Or if you really have the greens, get the PCB.

I feel the same with PS2 Strikers 1945 Collection. There is something off about it.

I prefer the SS version over the PSX version though (maybe it's just me).

Seriously? That was actually the only Squaresoft game I loved after they went to the playstation.
The boss fights were fucking awesome.
I'll admit that stages could have used some more variety, but overall, I thought it was pretty impressive.
