Hardest & most impressive boss fights (with videos)?

Post by moozooh »

I've been looking around for some impressive shmup boss fights and found quite a bunch, which I guess I will collect by dumping with available video links here in this post, but obviously I'd like to hear your opinions too (and add it to the list).

What I'm looking for is:
• very hard boss fights handled as well as possible;
• very visually impressive (even if not that hard) boss fights;
• very hard boss fights done in an unexpected manner or with tool-assistence.

What I'm not looking for is:
• overly long milking (like in ESP Ra.De.);
• fights that consist mainly of dying and/or bombing;
• fights that end as soon as they start.

If there is a video publicly available on the web, pointing me to it would be very appreciated.

CAVE

DoDonPachi Campaign Version/Blue ROM:
• TLB fight by SOF-WTN, A-L, 2 misses, 13 bombs — HQ AVI; YouTube.

DoDonPachi Dai-Ou-Jou:
• Tool-assisted last boss + TLB fight by Morimoto, A-E, no-miss, no-bomb, no-hyper — YouTube (looking for a higher quality version!);
• Death Label TLB fight (second form only) by BGR-44, A-S, no-miss, 4 bombs, 2 hypers — MPG.

DoDonPachi Dai-Ou-Jou Black Label:
• TLB fight by ISO, A-E, 1 miss, 2 bombs, 2 hypers — HQ AVI.

Ketsui — Kizuna Jigoku Tachi:
• TLB fight by unknown player, Panzer Jager, one miss, no-bomb, non-clear — WMV (incomplete), YouTube;
• TLB fight by MrMonkeyMan, Tiger Schwert, 2 misses, 6 bombs — HQ AVI.

Mushihime-sama:
• TLB fight (Ultra mode) by TGA-RET, W power, 3 misses, 7 bombs — YouTube.

Mushihime-sama Futari 1.5:
• Last boss + TLB fight (Ultra mode) by HARIST, abnormal Palm, 4 misses, 13 (?) bombs — YouTube (anything better out there? There must be).

Progear:
• TLB fight by Futobishi, Ring & Chain (?), 2 misses, 4 (?) bombs — YouTube.

Treasure

Gradius V:
• Boss rush (loop 10) by Shinya, default type, no-miss — WMV, YouTube 1, 2, 3.

Ikaruga:
• Stage 5 (Hard mode) boss fights by SWY, no-miss — YouTube.

Radiant Silvergun:
• Stage 6 boss (arcade version) swordplay fight by VTF-INO, no-miss — WMV.

Other doujins

Judgement Silversword:
• Divine Flow fight by unknown player, no-miss — YouTube.

Revision history:
2008-01-10 — added two more Cave videos, three Treasure videos, and a Judgement Silversword video.

To counteract the inevitable "pretty Cave patternitis" videos a little, the 5th boss in Raiden is extremely difficult to learn. Not "pretty-looking", but just "high-speed chaos". I've only no-miss no-bombed it once in ~100 tries. The 6th and 7th bosses are a complete joke (hard, but easy in comparison), and i haven't tried to no-miss no-bomb the 8th since i'm not yet able to reach it in 1 credit.

I've never made gameplay videos before but if it's easy i can make one, assuming i ever manage to no-miss no-bomb it again. I use CamStudio, any settings i should know about? Like what quality level to use for pleasing results but acceptable file size...

Raiden 2 is similiar, stage 5 and stage 6 boss are no joke, they are fast bullet hell! Stage 7 boss is easy and stage 8 boss requires just destroying crystals quickly to lower the difficulty of the fight

I prefer SWY's version, since he's facing a much denser bullet storm, but I'm not generally that impressed by Ikaruga boss fights because you don't actually dodge bullets, at least most of them.

Doesn't look that cool to me, to be honest. :(

Yes, I know his videos, they're cool. :) I'll include his DOOM fight; it's decent and has great picture quality compared to anything else I have at the moment.

I would like to not turn this thread into debate on what company does the hardest boss fights, and I haven't seen the 5th boss in Raiden either, but generally, based on my admittedly poor experience with them, I don't like Raiden's style. It looks bland and boring to me. Additionally, "I've only no-miss no-bombed it once in ~100 tries" doesn't telling me much because the phrase reflects neither your general playing skills, nor the time you have spent on Raiden, nor the particular reason the boss is so difficult.

But if you can find me a video of this boss, I'll definitely take a look at it.

That's good, thanks! I'll try to make an excerpt of the TLB fight from the full run like I did with DDP CV.

Haha, what the hell. :D
But I guess that works, too.

Yeah, but bullet-eating Tageri on Hard is probably the hardest task in the game. At least that's what SWY said and he is a former WR holder. Beaten by Leon-FMI nowadays.

And yes, the SWY vid is hell of a lot more impressive since he is playing the chapter at the end of his run and scoring over 34mil points. And still has balls to go for bullet-eating.

Does anyone have a link to the omake version where SWY bullet-eats Tageri even better? It suppose to be something like this.

Man, Ikaruga never fails to make my head implode. I can't even watch the damn game and know when to switch polarity let alone play it.

That last back and forth thing in the Ikaruga vid was awesome. Also, it made it ever so clear to me that my STG-skills are pathetic.

Hehe nm, i misinterpreted the thread. Difficult Raiden bits don't make for an interesting watch like Cave stuff does.

It's linked in my first post. >_>
Also, wtf, Insanity DVD? No way it is: if you notice, he doesn't even beat his own hiscore of 2.25 billions on that clear. Also, there's a counterstop video floating around with a couple updated strategies that in one case let you completely avoid the barrages if you bait them right.

Also, next update coming a bit later, I'm too swamped with work to watch a lot of videos recently. :\

Two questions then:
1) where did you get the WR replay;
2) is it available on YT or any other place like that?

you can still buy the official superplay dvd at play-asia.com .
the very short counter stop (1minute) video was on youtube and is not very spectacular since it shows just the last boss and the score is only slightly higher than the one on the dvd.

To be fair it would be quite a bit higher if there was no counter stop lol

but lack of full run = whatever

The counterstop movie I have here is 02:24 and I have no spare money for ordering the DVD at the moment (nor that I really care about it as much). It's just that it's not publicly available, then it won't end up in the first post, that's pretty much it.

Also, is it just me, or Play-Asia has no Futari DVDs?
