Little bit of kudos to IGN

Post by jp »

Just checked out their top 99 games of all time... and surprisingly enough, PDSaga was #17 and Radiant Silvergun was #12. Obviously, Souky, Hyper Duel, Lords of Thunder, etc. probably won't be showing up, but for IGN, having those two on there was a bit impressive. I didn't even realize those oafs had ever seen a Saturn.

On a more bitter note, no Ratchet and Clank game should've been ahead of PDSaga... or FF6 for that matter. Image

Edit: Or Mario Bros. 3... good God.

Well, at least the writer knew his stuff. However, even EGM gave mention of Soukyugurentai as an excellent shooter back when it was the general conception that Silvergun and Soukyu were 1 and 2.

They stuck a Saturn game or two to make teh h4rdc0r3 happy. That's why only the "big name" Saturn games appear.
"Sooo, what was it that you consider a 'good salary' for a man to make?"
"They should at least make 100K to have a good life"

EGM mentioned Souky? Does anyone know what issue that was and what year?

And yeah, IGN has been improving. I was impressed IGNCube not only reviewed, but gave a decent score to Chaos Field (it was compared to Radiant tho of course  ). Craig from IGNDS/GB is their best reviewer, I like how he stressed that Yoshi TnG must be played for score. Same with Shane B and others at EGM who reviewed it.

EDIT: I should add, it really IS lame IGN didn't have Souky on the list or at least one other vert shooter along with Radiant. Come on guys, diversify a bit. I remember 3 years ago when Tyco and Gabe @ Penny Arcade once made a major recommendation of Souky to their readers on their front page. That was cool. And to this day most of IGN still apparently thinks Radiant is the only vert shooter ever made.

Pretty clever of them to choose uber-expensive 'hardcore' games that no kid could try out cos they can't afford em.

 Neon, if you dropped your old "I am Neon, I am a sensible fan. Saturn and DC 'hardcore' fans see everything the way they wanna see it" Saturn/Sega/DC schtick for just a second....you'd realize the above smart aleck "common sense" reply of yours doesn't work and does not apply. Why?

A) Radiant is AT LEAST twice as expensive as Soukyugurentai. But that's besides the point because.... B)If IGN kids can somehow scrape together and successfully beg cash for toys like the PSP, expensive XBox Live monthly subscriptions (I know a 15 year old with XBox live, a zillion systems, no job who could have a modded Saturn and a copy of any Treasure or Raizing game from his mom right now if he wanted just because of his grades and chore favors, spoiled yes, but true), expensive add ons and subscriptions like the HD & FF11, then I'm pretty sure any kid turned onto a game like Souky would be able to get it if he wanted.

Kids are either spoiled, or if they're poor or middle class sell old crappy/unwanted games and do odd jobs to pay for extra stuff they want. Like I did when I wanted a Turbografx 16 to sit next to my NES back in '93. And then a Turbo Duo which I wanted for Gate of Thunder. Payed for about half of it, dad payed the rest. So, if a kid reading IGN likes shooters and has cut his teeth on Gradius and R-TYPE and redas something about a cool vert shmup he didn;t know about before, he is gonna try his best to get it with the above methods. He's not going to think 'Oh darn, that's a 'hardcore' game that is too expensive. Way out of my reach." He's gonna think of how to scam it off his parents or what he can sell off/work to get it. If it was a pricey PCB then you might have a point.

So needless to say, any kids reading Penny Arcade 3 years ago who saw Tyco and Gabe promo Souky probably were able to get the money to buy it somehow. Same for when both IGN and PA shouted about how great they thought Ikaruga was. So, hypothetical situation: based on all of the above, do you really think it would be that hard for them to get a game like Souky if they were pointed towards it? Hmmm. I'd have to say "No."

You misunderstood me...it would have been much better of them to point the kiddoes towards a more affordable USA released shmup on the playstation or something (strikers 2?). That might have won some converts to the genre. I doubt any young kid will want to shell out hundreds for a japanese Saturn and RS because a magazine ranked it the twelfth best game of all time. Better to point them towards something cheap on a console they already have. Makes them more willing to give the genre a chance...

I speak from personal experience. Probably never would have got my Saturn or any shooters without a lot of cheap stuff to try on my brother's playstation.

You both misunderstood me.

By the way, where did you get the extra smiley?

Better to point them toward Strikers or a cheapo PS1 Working designs PS1 port like Raystorm or Raycrisis? Both good games but that's a matter of your personal taste. And it would not necessarily cost "hundreds" to get a Saturn and a copy of Souky. A used Saturn and 4 in 1 can be had extremely cheap as anyone knows.

It would cost hundreds to get a Saturn and a copy of Radiant AND Souky.

EDIT: OK, so it could easily cost hundreds to get a Saturn 4 in 1, and Radiant itself. Just so I'm clear here. :P

IGN Kid will go on Gamefaqs, ask a few questions and find out he can play mods (!!!) on a U.S. Saturn using a 4 in 1. Then he'll think, "Hey, I'll just sell a bunch of my N64 carts, mow some lawns and and get what I want." (In case you haven't noticed, I would be a smart kid even if reading IGN, but hey I was smart even when I used to subscribe to Nintendo Power as a kid)

Well yeah, I started with Super R-TYPE and R-TYPE on the old B&W Chunkboy. But that just left me craving more.

You misunderstood them. Because the article was not written in order to get people into shmups, as much as it was to point out the top 99 games of all time or whatever.

Radiant Silvergun made the list because it is the shit, and despite what high ebay price haters and/or Saturn haters say, it is definitely regarded as one of the greatest games ever made, otherwise, it and all 50,000 of its copies wouldn't go for $150-200.

A "cheap-o playstation shmup port" didn't make the list, because apparently no one really felt "it" was one of the top 99 games of all time.

any list with that many games that doesn't include Star Control 2 has no credibility whatsoever as far as I'm concerned, no matter how many shmups make the list.
You're arguing for a universe with fewer waffles in it. I'm prepared to call that cowardice.

Of course, anytime a toplist agrees with your preferences, the writer is great.

When it doesn't, the writer sucks.

Quoted for truth :(
Not only is it a badass game, it's free and ported to a bunch of different platforms now :\

Been playing through the main campaign on my powerbook recently and it holds up really well.
