I'm in the middle of making a shmup for a contest over at the DBF-GVY democode forum. I need people here to stay quiet about this project please.
Here is the idea. This is a traditional 2d "shooting gallery" type shmup. It is this type of shmup because the contest calls for ONLY two buttons to control the game. I'm currently looking for a good way to make sure that the player has a chance of dodging and or reflecting enemy shots since they are confined to a horizontal line of movement.
The current built includes a rain of enemy bullets and some meaningless spawning torus. The enemies will come in from behind the world and scroll down giving the illusion of an impossible cylinder. Right now I just have a very simple 87 KB techdemo but I want to get your thoughts on this idea.
Actually it was suggested on Ceph's 2d forum that I implement a polarity system similar to Ikaruga to insure that the player had a way out due to the linear nature of movement. Hotting both buttons at once should change a field or do something to nullify some shots. This is why the game is autofire currently. Working with only two buttons for input really stretches your thinking but in a good way.
Some of the best shmups don't actually end in a vowel.
No, this game is not Space Invaders.
Looks cool and very unique. That bent pipe adds a nice touch and will also serve as an obstacle if I’m not mistaken.
You could build entire cities or a canyon on that cylinder’s surface, in case you don’t want to/can’t use a polarity system.
I've added a new twist it is called the "candy maker" basically it turns enemy shots into candy and candy into enemy shots. Hit both left and right at once to activate.

Yes! That's what I was thinking. Imagine a crazy maze on the surface of the cylinder! You could have a hi-speed stage like Gradius
I know it's just a demo, but if you align your ship on the left edge, the bullets don't appear out of the ship - looks like they get instantly clipped.
SiKrAiKeN: While I don't think everyone here -is- a Ninja Turtle, I DO believe everyone here has the potential to be a Ninja Turtle. No doubt.
