2D Shoot Em Ups on X-Box360, PS-3, Wii…
Well. It’s been well over a year since the X-Box 360, PS-3 & Wii were released, but not a single game for these consoles has caught my eye to justify buying any of the three so far.
I’m an old-school gamer, I prefer 2D Shoot Em Ups like R-Type & Gradius, Ikaruga, Raiden, Parodius. But so far to my knowledge, none of this genre has been released on any of the 3 consoles?!
And no, all those 2D downloadable games for a 5$-10$ fee don’t count. I want a full retail game released on disc media!
So, which of the three systems has a better chance of getting 2D Shoot Em Ups to spend my hard earned money on?!
Thanks in advance.

Well - the Wii's got that compilation on the way featuring Karous, Radilgy and Chaos Field....
Th 360's doing so well commercially on XBL they're likely to continue with downloads in general...
I'm sure once (or if) the PS3 establishes itself it might see some 2D releases in keeping with the PS2's catalogue, but last time I pressed the issue with the SCEE PR department it seemed they don't want to sully the consoles high-spec reputation with too many retail 2D titles just yet.

Totally forgot Shiki! That Raiden compilation is coming is it? I thought it recently got denied.genetik wrote:Both the Wii and the 360 have Shikigami no Shiro 3. There's a Raiden compilation coming to 360 sometimes in 2008.
Also, I think Ikaruga is finally going to end up on XBLA really soon....
Ikaruga was up briefly on De-bug 360s with press logins, so it should definitely come to 360, but it's sadly not retail/boxed, which is what the poster wanted.

Everyday Shooter (PS3) is probably my favorite downloadable game. Period. I'm thinking seriously about putting it on my top 25 list this year, along with Shiki 3, which has been mentioned already.
I've also been thinking of working on a general overview/review of downloadable shooters, but I probably won't bother because I'd have to pay for and play Nucleus. The demo for this one was a complete bore.

I have Nucleus and to be honest the demo does a great job of summing up an interesting but dull game. I just got Everyday Shooter on debug (still not released here in the UK!) and it truly is great.professor ganson wrote:Everyday Shooter (PS3) is probably my favorite downloadable game. Period. To be honest ST Dragon, though I understand your desire to get boxed copies, you really are missing out on some great download shooters. Furthermore, if publishers like Eidos get there way, and downloads continue to succeed, it won't be long before the boxed copy of even the most substantial new release is a thing of the past...

Here's what I know about the Wii:
-Castle of Shikigami III America localization
-Milestone shooter collection (Chaos Field, Radirgy, and Karous) probably getting America localization
-Shin Chuuka Taisen America localization as "Monkey King: The Legend Returns"
-Star Soldier R coming as one of first WiiWare games (it's Hudson, so it'll probably get an America localization)
-Geometry Wars: Galaxies, if you want to call that a shoot 'em up
-huge backlibrary of Virtual Console shoot 'em ups for people who just happen to not have every single console and shoot 'em up in existence

Of course, that's just an opinion.

Sorry - meant to say; Professor - I'll happily do the Nucleus bit if you do go ahead with the overview/review idea, which I think you should as it's well needed.spadgy wrote:I have Nucleus and to be honest the demo does a great job of summing up an interesting but dull game. I also think you do miss out on a lot of really good stuff...I mean, take the upcoming Omega Five as an example. For under 10 Euros you get what could probably easily sell as a full priced arcade port on the Dreamcast. Sure, you can't burn it to a disc (yet) and you probably loose the game with the death of the hardware in a couple of years, but imo that's a little bit like the arcade scene. Arcade machines are installed, played and when the owner thinks that they aren't profitable anymore he replaces them with a another title.ST Dragon wrote:And no, all those 2D downloadable games for a 5$-10$ fee don’t count. I also like a nice booklet and pretty cover but if the price of the download is reasonable, then where's the problem?
And who knows? Maybe MS/Sony release a "hardcopy" compilation of some of the best XBLA/PSN games on a disc someday.

It really just depends on what type of games you like, as these shmups go.
Arena shmups in particular are popular right now.....
Geometry Wars Galaxies, in my opinion, is awesome. That's the DS version that I have, though. Not sure how easy the Wiimote will be for zthat game (my arms tire easy....).
For the PS3, I currently have Everyday Shooter (awesome.... just awesome), and Blast Factor, which is another good one with a huge number of levels, and a scoring system rewarding careful accuracy. Harder than I thought it'd be, that's for sure....
I forget which games I have for the 360... I cant use that thing right now much, not till my brother goes back to college in a couple weeks, so Im sorta blanking out on it here..... But there are some good ones, even if my memory is failing me, lol.
And of course, the ones mentioned above, that'll come soon.

I don't think so. Most of the Wii stuff are rehashes, compilations and ports of older titles while the 360 gets nearly all of the "fresh" concepts like Senko no Ronde (probably also the recently announced sequel...), Omega Five and the upcoming Treasure title. While Nintendo recycles old console titles that are perfectly emulated anyway, XBLA offers usually the superior arcade version.Asherdude wrote:It looks like the Wii is becoming the developers first choice for our future shmups. Those japanese sale figures must be too hard to ignore.
I also have my doubts about japanese sale figures resulting in more shmups because most people who buy a Wii seem to be mainly interested in casual games or the Nintendo stuff.
Imho if stuff like Omega Five, Mutant Storm, Ikaruga (HD) sells well there's a big chance that XBLA will turn into a next gen Dreamcast sort of thing.

One could say the same thing about 360 owners and first-person shooters, but that would be considered ignorant and rude.Necronom wrote:I also have my doubts about japanese sale figures resulting in more shmups because most people who buy a Wii seem to be mainly interested in casual games or the Nintendo stuff.
The majority of people buying any system aren't interested in shmups.
The Wii can already play Ikaruga.Imho if stuff like Omega Five, Mutant Storm, Ikaruga (HD) sells well there's a big chance that XBLA will turn into a next gen Dreamcast sort of thing.
Both systems have a decent number of shooters on the way. We'll have to watch the sales figures to see which way developers are going to go.

SS HD is far faster, closer to Geometry Wars, and lasts a fair while longer. It's more intense basically. More traditional, and certainly a far purer arena-based shmup.antron wrote:so how does Super Stardust HD compare to Everyday Shooter?
Everyday Shooter is pretty hard, but slower, and as much about the experience of sound and visuals as about high score. But, it's still got a lot of depth. The eight levels all have a totally different chaining mechanics, most of which you have to work out yourself. It's more varied than SS HD, and really satisfying. More like Rez and Every Extend Extra. Maybe not one for score fiends.
I love them both, but if you've already got Geometry Wars, Blast Factor, Mutent Storm etc. go for Every Day Shooter

Then why not just keep playing games from older consoles that we already have? You won't need to spend any additional money at all.D wrote:Ah another fuk this gen thread.
Get a cab and buy some pcb's. It'll cost a bit more, but has way more value.
I have probably 150 shooters and have 1CCed maybe 3 of them. I've enough of a backlog to last several lifetimes without having to keep up with every new generation of console and games.

Considering the sales performance of Shikigami no Shiro 3 on the Xbox 360 compared to the Wii in Japan, I'm not sure if this is going to be the case.Asherdude wrote:It looks like the Wii is becoming the developers first choice for our future shmups. I saw the same chart. Link. 3,100 for the 360 and 970 for the Wii. But did you notice that the 360 had only 2 entries on that chart? Kingdom Under Fire was the other one. I'm thinking that Shikigami no Shiro 3 did so well on the 360 is because the average Japanese 360 owner just isn't into Halo 3 or Call of Duty 4. If it wasn't for those 2 titles, no one would have bought much of anything for the 360 in Japan.RyanDG wrote:Considering the sales performance of Shikigami no Shiro 3 on the Xbox 360 compared to the Wii in Japan, I'm not sure if this is going to be the case.Asherdude wrote:It looks like the Wii is becoming the developers first choice for our future shmups. When I was speaking about sales, I was talking about the over all console numbers. Nintendo sold 168,000 Wii's while Sony sold 53,000 PS3's and Microsoft sold 8,700 360's. Those are the numbers that developers can't ignore.
