Gradius 3 hit box video

Post by landshark »

How did they do this?

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GFMIStCZgQc

Is this an edited video or is there a mode on one of the ports to do this?

That's pretty neat, if a little dull after all 7 or so minutes...

It's in PS2's Gradius III+IV.

That would be my comment on the video, there's unfortunately no option to see the hitbox on the US Gradius 3 and 4, I had heard and saw a video of Gradius 4 with the hitbox option on, so apparently Gradius 3 also got the same treatment.

It's semi-interesting, but in no way is it going to help you complete this stupidly difficult game.

In IV you have to clear the game's "Hi-Score Try" mode, which is the same thing as normal game on defaults but you get a password in the end. After that the Hit Disp can be activated from the Pause menu. Maybe it's the same for III.

Clear as in 1CC, or just get through using continues?

Anyone know if it's on the PAL version?

Don't know if credit-feeding would count, but since it's Gradius, it might be easier to one-life the game instead of recovering from a checkpoint.

The PAL version doesn't even have Hi-Score Try, so who knows if they removed the Hit Disp code completely or just removed the part which accesses it but left the code in there. Or if they changed the requirements.

Just watched the video, very interesting indeed!

What's the music playing in the background by the way?
I don't recognize it as any of the classic Gradius tunes!

Is the Hi-Score Try in the US version?

ST Dragon>

The background music for the first part of the video is an arranged version of Try to Star (the Level 3 part 1 theme.) It's from the album Gradius Perfect Selection, which is a compilation of Gradius tunes done in '90s synth rock style...really fun album if you enjoy the style.

As for the second one, no clue...

bcass>

I don't recall High Score Try being in the US version, either...if it was, at least not with that goofy name.

I don't have the US version but I'd guess it's not in there, as the point of Hi-Score Try was to get the password which you would then enter at a website to enter into the competition, much like in Gradius V. Only this compo was for Japan only.

Sounds sensible. Good enough for me.

Gradius (3, anyway) has bordered on manic at times with the stuff I could get away with avoiding enemies/bullets, and this video only cements that reputation. I really expected those annoying bubbles to have more of a hit...bubble. I guess.
