Any 2008 New Year resolutions shmup-wise?

Post by PC Engine Fan X! »

Since it's a whole new year, what are your New Year resolutions when it comes to the niche genre known as shmups?

Mars Matrix +1 trillion points, start up the arranged mode for fun. Maybe play a few other games semi-seriously like Batrider and Strikers 99.

Post up a 78-83 countdown thread. :?

I ended '07 and I'm beginning '08 by taking a long, long break from this genre. I'm content with how I played in 2007, including the three 1cc's I grabbed this year and doing decently in the competitions as well.

For now, I'm currently enjoying playing Street Fighter Alpha 2 online via ggpo.net. When I get back to shooters, I'd like to the 1cc Normal Course on Batrider. Envy is a total cocksuck, though.

Edit: If Plasmo quits video games, I'm going to be a sad, sad person.

I plan on making a vertically oriented shmup with solid, chunky graphics and a lot of animation. The game will have a resolution of 640x480 and the playing area will be 480x480. My main aim is to make a game that feels dynamic and alive.
It is powerup of laser.

To re-do my gameroom to include a HD flat panel LCD (42 to 50 in.) and one or two tates set up next to it. To this day I've yet to tate any of my shmups.

This one. I just need to pick a game and stick with it. I'm leaning towards Galuda, with its built-in safety mechanics, but something like DDP or ESPRaDe also seems like a good pick. Definitely a Cave game, though.

Picking some games and sticking, rather than jumping from one to another without getting as good as I could at any.

Any maybe jumping from Supergun to Cab...

And getting on the Progear leaderboard here.

Galuda 1 is not hard at all to 1cc, so it's a good one to start on. You can pretty much bomb through anything difficult aside from the final form of the final boss, which is actually not that hard once you recognize there's pretty much a safe 'zone' you can hang out in for half the fight.

Personally I'll work on getting the 1cc on Futari Original and Maniac, both of which I'm not that far off from. Maybe I'll slog through Ultra mode enough that I'll get somewhere in that, although not so likely.

Assuming I do that, I'll probably go back and get the 1cc on ESPG2, which I'd been ever so close to doing for a long while.

Since I just switched to a lousy composite supergun to a beautiful VGA display through a XRGB2, I plan to revisit my favorite shmups and just please my eyes :D
I also plan to buy Futari 1.5, and play Death Smiles and Dodonpachi Dai Fukkatsu

To not be stupid about it and actually play the shooters I have access to, not so many at once, and not as much. I just got Gekioh. Maybe that'll help somewhat.

I'd like to see some folks on this board nail the AC in Under Defeat.

Well, at the end of last year, I tried to SCC all 6 Mega-CD shmups before the end of the year (I undertook the project in mid November). I missed it by one game (fuck you and your long ass stages Dennin Aleste!).

So my first goal for this year is to SCC Dennin Aleste.

Then I'm going to tackle Recca.
