Best looking 2D shmup?
Best looking 2D shmup?
What do you think?
I did mean mostly pixel art games and not those bad looking pre-rendered stuff.

Not to be annoying, just asking for clarification. Is the question just:
What's the best looking shmup?
Or is there some special way you're using "2D" here, so that some shmups are 2D, others aren't. I assume that there is a sense in which Space Invaders and Galaga are 2D and Gradius V is not, though all of these are shmups (setting aside for present purposes the issue of forced scrolling) since the gameplay is 2D.
Anyway, you're probably just asking: What's the best looking shmup?
ESPGaluda, Harmful Park, and Radiant Silvergun would be at the top of my list, though I definitely need to give it some more thought.

I believe by "2D", LRa meant a shmup that used 2D graphics, as opposed to those new-fangled polygons all the kiddies are gah-gah over.professor ganson wrote:Not to be annoying, just asking for clarification. Is the question just:

Anything that Joker Jun was the artist for is guaranteed to look just splendid. I'm a big fan of Batsugun, but all his work is great.
I find the graphics in TFIV pretty impressive, probably the best looking 16-bit shmup I've played. There are probably some nicer looking Duo games out there though.
I've been playing Gradius Galaxies lately, that's very easy on the eyes. I love it when the background goes from the generic Gradius space background to the sprawling galaxy in the background of the first level.
Not a shmup, but I like the style of the Metal Slug games.
A lot of these games aren't really being judged on a technical level, just my feelings towards the art direction.
all the cave games look really nice art and design wise, and are the best as far as current shooters go when compared to others out now (especially 3d shooters) its no contest. although it seems like guwange and others have a mix of pre rendered 3d sprites which i dislike compared to completely hand drawn stuff.
dimahoo is really nice though, in the hunt, rayforce, raiden 2, plenty of other mid-90's and older games all have good 2d art. all the raizing games have the good purely 2d art thing going on with them.
hard for me to pick just one..

I think XEXEX was gorgeous.
Other nice ones include Salamander 2, Gradius V, and R-type Final.
but are we talking 2D or 2.5D?
There is a difference.

Gradius V still has 2d gameplay. The topic wasnt clear enough to start off with but that it was to be about 2d graphic-wise shmups was made clear a few posts ago.

Best Looking 2d SHMUP goes to...
Feudal Japanese art theme + vivid colors + screenfilled action + CAVE = Guwange, the best looking 2d SHMUP IMHO.
