Gauze - kao o aratte denaoshite koi -- damn this is awesome, the kind of punk I want.
Converge - No Heroes -- converted, even if the occasional clean singing is crap.

If i had to pick a fave i'd probly go with In Their Darkened Shrines. But i have a feeling it's only because it was the one i started with and have thus studied the most.
I also love their last 2 albums. I only recently got the first 2 so they haven't yet sunk in, no judgement yet apart from the fact that there's definitely several amazing tracks.

That's the one I had recommended to me previously. I'll try my best to find it. Thanks!

I have several massive lists of stuff to check out. Here's what I'm going to try for this weekend:
That is pretty crazy, Neon. Looking at the Matador list, didn't realize Times New Viking had made the leap. Matador has some pretty cool things on the roster, for sure, but I don't think as an indie label they really have their own sound which would make it worth exploring in depth. But I guess if you just want to survey some popular and once popular indie groups.
The Pitchfork list looks like major crap after the top 10 (1 if I'm feeling snooty). 11-20 is a real iffy stretch. Maybe it is because it was the year I found the site, but I think the 2002 list was their best.
Just got a few more discs from the doom/metal section of my favourite indie;
Hate Eternal: I Monarch. Not really my kind of thing usually, but everyone needs a bit of death metal in their lives, and this is fun unpretencious stuff.
Khanate: Things Viral. Can't believe it's taken me so long to get into Khanate. Anyone who thinks sunn0))) are extreme should give this a listen. Horrible, disgustingly slow, and surprisingly satisfying for something so sparse.
If anyone can recommend me anything else go for it.
Zuntata f. Tamayo Kawamoto- 10cm 四方の青空 (10cm shihou no aozora- Blue sky as if drawn in picture) My search for this one finally came to an end at Amazon Japan. No regrets.
Rio Hamamoto & various others - Tekken 5 OST
- The Dragon's Nest theme "Those Who Go To Heaven" is what I've got playing right now.
Takeshi Miura (BGM composer) & Naohiko Higuchi (Guitar) - Time Crisis 4 OST
- "Once Again" is an awesome mix of the signature Wild Dog theme. This and the Final Battle's "Leave it to us" with the Mozart-style choir raise what would've otherwise been a 10/10 to an 11. Stage 1 Area 1's "Infiltration" comes in with a bang. Jack's S2A3 theme "To Live or Die" barrels along furiously at 180+ BPM while nailing you to the wall with a mad bass guitar line, a bit like something out of Battle Bakraid.
Various artists - Gitadora V
- "Handsome Kyoudai Made In Japan", "Hana Mogera", "K", Jimmy Weckl's "Mangekyou", and "Nyandafuru 55" for the win.
A hard to get into album that haunts you until it just clicks and you truly appreciate it's brilliance.
Everybody who's up for a gnostic ride trough surreal New York should check it out.
It's a multi layered masterpiece both auraly and lyricaly and Peter Gabriel's magnum opus.
Easily one of my all time top five, highly recommended!

Side 2: Haven't listened to it yet, due to side 1.
Lol, you'll hate it. It applies exactly the same principal to Boris' Motorhead-esque alter ego. I thought the simplicity of adding a layer of noise to the mix helped both discs, but that's just me. The second disc is really where it shines though.

Khanate were the shit. I saw them live 3 times and they levelled the place each time. I can't push Nightstick enough. Corrupted is good. Check out Otesanek. I'm not a big fan, but they're locals and do the super slow doom thing pretty well. If you like SUNN0))) you should check out OX,it's guitarist from Sons of OTIS doing drone. Also, Burning Witch. It's Stephen O'Malley's previous from Khanate's previous band. More like the first Khanate album than the later releases. Other than that... Unearthly Trance, Monarch... and a bunch of other good ones that aren't quite as slow as Khanate but pretty great doom regardless.

Unholy - The Second Ring of Power
Siege - Drop Dead
Can't find any of these.
I'm pretty sure Siege is out of print. It's worth it to track it down. I'm interested to hear the drummer from Siege/Nightstick's new band called Spoils, which also features the guitarist from Nightstick and one of the other members of Siege.
Thanks for all the suggestions. Now I've got my student loan through, I might have a little spurge. I love Burning Witch, but their stuff is really hard to come across. I wish Southern Lord would do a re-issue.
We were talking about Sunn0))) down the pub last night, and we all agreed that they've pretty much reached the end of their life-span. I've noticed they've started taking themselves a bit too seriously as well, which is missing the point a bit, but nm.
As for Khanate live, my housemate saw them just before they split up. She has super-humanly strong ears, but even she said she felt pretty sick from the volume. It sounds like bliss
Rob wrote:This might be an obvious one, but Fushitsusha has a fair amount in common with the most agonizing doom (like Khanate).
Been listening to Withdrawe... (etc. rest of title goes here)
Without going the PSF route, I think Gold Blood is the best/cheap Fushitsusha. I also think it may be the last great Fushitsusha since after that they've become less interesting (IMO) and I've stopped keeping up with all their releases.
