The fun part was spending hours trying to devise a dependable scoring strategy to get me through stage two. This is also the last game that was able to bring me into the "flow".
i was having fun with stage 1, because compared to stage 2 it is much trickier.
im currently playing it pretty hard too. its just addicting.

- Battle Garegga forever : this is the only game I will play for years. I should get seriously in Ibara ps2 port but, every time I play it, I feel like a BG credit would be more enjoyable.

Apart from this gem I enjoyed :
- Shippou Mahou Daisakusen (Kingdom Granprix) shooting mode : simple old school blasting !
- Darius Gaiden : addictive
- Same! Same! Same! md port : easy but fun
- Kyuukyoku Tiger md port : every time I got my ass handed but cannot resist another credit until I feel like crushing the wall :P
- Kyuukyoku Tiger II Plus : bad balanced but fun enough
- V 5 md port : pre manic adrenaline booster game
- W Ring: The Double Rings : catchy bleepy soundtrack keeps me playing this Gradius clone !
- Border Down : hard but awesome

Most of my shmupping time was spent with Giga Wing 1 and 2. Too bad I'm still crappy at them. :(
Also I found out I actually like checkpoint wall-dodging games like Gradius and R-Type. Who knew? (Still crappy at those, too.)

Goals for 2008: Become marginally less crappy.

I agree that stage 1 is tricky, and the timing is really tight. My problem in stage 2 is managing my bombs correctly.

In year 2007, my most enjoyable new shmup award goes to Jeff Minter's Space Giraffe.

Housemarque's Super Stardust HD was a close second.

Honorable mentions: Mutant Storm Empire and Gyruss (2007 HD Remix).

For shmups I mostly played Senko no ronde(360), Darius Gaiden, ESP Rade and Battle bakraid last year, not that I played them that much last year (exept for senko, maybe). Better redeem myself.

Gradius V
Zero Gunner 2, Under Defeat, Trigger Heart Exelica, Border Down, Psyvariar 2. DC looking pretty decent through VGA on a HD, but I'd still like to get HD remakes or updates on XBLA.
I hope Trigger Heart and Ikaruga do well enough in terms of sales, to spur G-Rev into XBLA production. Yes lads, you do have a Western audience.

Under Defeat, Soukyugurentai (got close to 1ccing both of those), a bit of Lords of Thunder and Nexzr (beaten), and at the end of the year I rediscovered Border Down (still suck at it).

I guess it must have been Ketsui for me (while it was in the arcade - I don't own it). A masochist's choice really, but a good game.

Glad to see that Border Down has been mentioned by at least three people on this page. By the looks of the Hi-Sc thread I was worried that no-one was playing it.

Otomedius.

But that's sort of cheating since it's virtually all I played, alongside Mushihimesama Futari (and BL) various Cave shmups here and there, and Raiden IV. Once.

Gate of Thunder. Playing it on a Wii via that dual analog SNES pad is truly a religious experience.

For 2007, I probably put the most time into Sengoku Blade and Hyper Duel, but Psyvariar 2 has been dominating 2008 so far.

2007 was the year when I bought me a Saturn. Of the SAT-shmups I have so far, Souky, Garegga and Batsugun have brought me the most enjoyment. I'm foreseeing getting into DDP and RSG during the course of 2008. Good times ahead!

Mostly played Mushimesama but got some time in on Pink Sweets, Esp Galuda 2 and so on.

Best NEW game (though I didn't play it till 2008) was MUCHI MUCHI PORK! It rocks.
