Which Shmup Did You Enjoy Most in 2007?

Post by Ceph »

For me it was good old Recca and Nexzr. They just don't make 'em like that anymore. In general I also enjoyed Toaplan games quite a bit, like Tastujin Ou.

Dodonpachi, but it's the year when I finaly discovered Espgaluda and Futari and DOJ and Ikaruga and Gradius V... about all the Cave & Treasure stuff that's not playable on MAME. Have only been able to play a few credits of each though, but I would have enjoyed them a lot if I had been able to play them seriously ^_^

2D Game ? Puyo puyo !

I spent a hell of a lot of time in 2007 playing Under Defeat, as well as Karous, Keio Yuugekitai, Bari-Arm and Pink Sweets.

You've had a damn good year of discovery!

It's been Mushihimesama and Psyvariar 2 mainly for me this year...

Gradius Gaiden by far. I enjoyed getting my butt kicked on Last Hope, too.

2d game? I guess Arcana Hearts.

Ketsui, which I foolishly sold earlier in the year

If I manage to scrape together the cash for a board (or if it gets emulated), I daresay the answer will be the same for 2008.

After playing plenty of of Esprade and Dodonpachi on MAME a few years ago I 'rediscovered' Cave shooters after picking up Espgaluda on PS2. After getting that I went on to buy Ibara, Mushihimesama and DDP:DOJ.

I spent most of my time playing Mushihimesama Arrange.

I picked up my first Supergun and Espgaluda 2 a couple of months ago and I've barely touched the PS2 ports since.

I'm on the lookout for a Mushihimesame Futari 1.5 at the moment....

(Not posted in the Trading thread yet but if anyone is selling one LMK :D )

I was a bit too busy in '07 to sink real time into any one shmup. My best discovery was likely

PROGEAR

Such superb gameplay.

But this was the year I got going with MAME and PCBs, so I discovered loads of games that were previously inaccessible to me. My top 25 list will never be the same.

I only got back into shmups in October, and tried about 30 or so classics for the first time (mostly on mame). Of those i played about 10 for any appreciable length of time. Of those favorites, the winner is:

Battle Bakraid

Edit 10/01/08: BTW the honorable mentions were: Dragon Blaze, Viper Phase 1, Batsugun, Raiden, DoDonPachi, Raiden Fighters Jet, DonPachi.

Same here. I played the game to death this year. And every single playing was enjoyable.

Under Defeat - 2007 Shmup of the Year.

I also spent alot of time on Taito shmups, like Darius Gaiden, G Darius and RayStorm. Batsugun got much play as well.

Definitely Chaos Field for me, though replacing my destroyed copy of R-Type III with my Wii's Virtual Console has been pretty awesome too.
Of course, that's just an opinion.

Best new game - Death Smiles! Just a shame I didn't have more time to play it.

Most played/enjoyed - Played a lot of games from the early 90s this year. Raiden DX, Konami stuff, some early Psikyo, and I got 4 Toaplan PCBs this year (Outzone, Dogyuun, Tatsujin-Oh & Vimana) all of which I love!
