Xenocide Files: PS2

Post by shinsage »

is there a way someone can update the PS2 list?
for a site considered by many to be the authoritative source on the genre, it'd be nice if things were updated beyond 2004.

As has been mentioned few times before, malc is the only one who can update the main site and he wants to keep it that way. In the mean time there's this thread.
No matter how good a game is, somebody will always hate it. No matter how bad a game is, somebody will always love it.

gyah..
well, does anyone know any way to contact malc?
I know it sounds troublesome to e-mail the guy about this, but it is his web site after all.

There are even some discrepancies that could confuse people new to the genre (such as claiming that Dragon Blaze was released in USA, whereas it has never been).

i mean, it's just kinda sad that shmups.com has been nothing but this forum for the past few years instead of keeping the main site up to date.

I'll just say what I did the last time this came up:
Ghegs wrote:As it is, Malc has been busy with real life for quite a few years but he still wants to keep the main site as his own since he thinks he can get back to it eventually. And that's all there is to it.
Legends say contacting Malc is akin to contacting the ancestors of the nether realm: the moon needs to be just right and you be better be wearing a funny hat.

Point is: the main site will remain locked in a time bubble until malc returns and there's really nothing we can do about it. That's why that other thread collects new and updated info, so that he doesn't have to scrounge around for it.

I love this quote, and think it should be the de facto answer to any requests.

Wife: "Did you take out the garbage?"
Guy: "No, I've been busy with real life. For quite a few years."
Wife: "Fine, I'll take it out myself!"
Guy: "No, I think I can get back to it eventually. But if you want to collect it in one place so I don't have to scronge around for it, that would be super."

Anyway, there's also that wiki that someone linked to a while back, but it was pretty desolate. And there's Wikipedia itself. You could probably create a "list of scrolling shooters" article and break it down into sections by platform, unless they think it's not encyclopedic enough or something.

Honestly a site cannot be authoritative when it's not updated for years. Time to use/make a new definitive shmup site. I think solo web editing is archaic, everything should be wikified.

It's like open source software. There's no point using rare commercial or free stuff when you don't know if it will still be maintained in 5 years. With open source it doesn't matter if the original maintainer vanishes. It's why most of the best emulators are open source.

s'actually quite easy to contact me - just send me an email!

gaaargh... hello evbody...

well, I think I said it before, shmups.com started as a hobby of mine, to post up reviews I made of a game genre I love. and dya know wot - thats really still what it is. This isnt one of those corporate gamer institutions, its my personal shmups site for me having fun with - updating reviews and things as I see fit - when I get time. Honestly, I've only had time to get 4 stars in super mario galaxy and I've had it for ages now.

mind you, bloodf runs this forum, which is lovely and alive and everything. Bear in mind that shmups.com is still a hobby, its for fun, for personal pleasure in having an old fashioned style of site updated in an old fashioned manner. Like its 1997 all over again. I make websites for a living, and html these days isnt quite as much fun as the old way was.

so... every so often I shove another couple of reviews up, but not as often as I'd like. I used to do it every day for a couple of hours. Just cant devote the time to it. And if that means its not as authoritative as it should be - well, actually theres a bunch more sites out there that are now. It wasnt intended to be like that. However though, its got the bestest shmups forum hasnt it? and that's no thanks to me mind you, thats down to bloodf and all the mods.

So... I suppose people will say - hand it over to somebody else, let it become all wikified and cookie cutter and whatever... nah... sorry, can't do that. It my site and I'll try and update it when I can.. but unlike other stuff in my life I wont let shmups.com turn into something unfun and pressured. Its my fun outlet - people send me reviews, I sit and htmlise them up and put them online. If you want to see it as more than that then thats cool but thats really what it is. Why do we have to make things all modern and the same as everything else out there? why cant they stay the same?

anyway, star collecting awaits :)

I've collected 89 stars.... even the 1st 4 were fun right, it stays that way.

I'd like to see new reviews but honestly the trading forum and having some smaller very good games pointed out has been of the most values to me. then it has also brought the curse of PCBs, they are evil and addicting. they K.O. your wallet.
Damn Tim, you know there are quite a few Americans out there who still lives in tents due to this shitty economy, and you're dropping loads on a single game which only last 20 min. Do you think it's fair? How much did you spend this time?

I think Malc's absolutely entitled to feel how he does. It's his (brilliant) hobby site and we've tagged along for an excellent ride through this forum. So the worldwide shmup scene has chosen to make Malc's home it's home - then we should be grateful for the hospitality and the living conditions.

And anyway - oart of the fun of exploring shmups is visiting other sites and chatting in the forums to discover all there is to be learned and played. If it were ALL here it might take some of the fun away...

That must be why he has so many reviews to upload. He purposefully only puts up a few new ones at a time, so the entire library of shmups across different arcade and console systems isn't spoiled for everyone. We get to experience the games more slowly this way.

I don't think he put that much thought into his reason's.... you're sounding like an english teacher now with WAY to much interpretation between the lines ect.

Well, while we all appreciate the reply there.....

Im gonna have to go along with the idea of "hand the site off to someone else".

As it is, to me, the actual "shmups.com" doesnt even exist.

It's just a strange screen I must pass through on my way to the magic button that actually gets me to these boards. There just never seems, to me, to be much of a point to that first screen.

If Im looking for an actual SITE about stuff like this, I go to Shoot-the-Core or something like that. This place, all about the boards, in my view.

There, that's my opinion anyway.

If it really bugs you that much, feel free to make you're own site about shmups and update it everyday.
