Just ordered Gradius Gaiden!

Post by SheSaidDutch »

Abit of an impulse buy but I'm sure It's going to be worth it, as I love the Gradius series 8)

I just need a PSOne now

How does Gaiden compare to the other Gradius series?

Great choice, great game. Probably the best horizontal shmup on the PSX (just barely ahead of Einhander and Delta imo.) In fact I still probably like it just a smidge more than the stellar Gradius V. You will not be dissapointed.

By your post Jon, looks like It shall be worth it

Since no one mentions Gradius 4 much

Whats the official word/pinion on Gradius 4?

I've heard about the rather medicore/unoriginal levels, and the back to Gradius 2 no edit options.

Gradius gaiden... you WILL be pleased.
I am not much of a Gradius fan (lukewarm towards 1-4, but like Generations/Galaxies a bit more) but gaiden is really something special. I'm having a hard time deciding whether I like gaiden or V more.

I got Gaiden not too long ago (I also ordered it from Play-Asia--PSOne Books release). It's a great game. You'll no doubt enjoy it.

As for Gradius IV, I actually like it a lot. The graphics don't hold up well over time, but they don't look poor by any means. It's definitely the reason to own the III & IV pack for PS2.

The one thing that's spoiled me with Gradius V though, is the freeze option. I want that in every Gradius game I play now. :P

Gradius Gaiden is one of the (many) reasons to own a PS1! It's a classy shooter in every respect... I just LOVE the graveyard stage where hulks of the old Gradius bosses float around. Beautiful stuff.

Buying Gradius Gaiden is not an impulse, it is a necessity.

I envy you. You're gonna love it. It's the best hori shmup on the PSX, hands down.

Congrats!

NOT the best hori on PSX, but a good game

Post by neojma »

OK, Gradius Gaiden is quite a good game. The best in the Gradius series, if you ask me. But I don't think it's the best hori on the PSX. That honor goes to one G Darius. Can't belive the lack of respect here! Horrible!

Seriously though, Gradius Gaiden is an excellent game. SECOND best hori on PSX in my opinion and absoultely worth owning.

Very true... gaiden was one of the few game originals I bought during my trip to Hong Kong last year (the great majority were bootlegs  ) but I am EXTREMELY glad that I did buy this... $150 HKD (~$27CAD) for PSOne Books version, no taxes. I tried to haggle it down but they wouldn't let me. Ah well, for now it is the prize piece of my PS1 originals.

I regret not buying DOJ and Galuda originals since I had the chance though, but they were around $360 HKD each...

"The best in the Gradius series"

Ehm, no. That would be G5.

As for G Darius you are 100% right. That one is definately better then Gradius Gaiden.
Indeed, the lack of respect .. I thought this was a shmup forum, G-Darius is unbelievable!!!!
I have the Jap import.

Okay, okay. You're right about G. Darius. Gradius Gaiden and G. Darius are the best horizontal shmups on the PSX. No argue in that. Both are equally great. :)

Even though I enjoy GV a lot, Gaiden is still a better game. And a lot of Gradius fans here agreed.

G-Darius would be a great game if they took out all the uninspired parts and upgraded the engine so there would be less slowdown. As it is, it isn't that great of a game. It has good ideas and bosses, but they aren't pulled off as well as they should.

Edit: and whether Gradius V or Gradius Gaiden is superior to one another is EXTREMELY HIGHLY DEBATABLE.

The Gradius Series isn't my cup of of tea (I hate check points when you die) but if you like the series, you'll love this.
Typical Gradius FMV intro & interesting never before seen Gradius levels.
The 1st Gradius Gaiden Snow level with snow worm boss, I haven't seen anything similar before.

Don't think so. G5 is the best. (I've played them all, since 1985)

I actually have the PC version of G-Darius, which has far less slowdown and doesn't have the mid-level stalled loading during path selection. It also features a digital audio OST (burned straight to CD for my listening pleasure) and much cleaner visuals (although, this is a double-edged sword, considering the polygon/texture density in the game).

Now.. if only the game would stop crashing on certain levels. :/ I probably need to track down a patch. Not to mention that I need to check the connection between my CD drive and soundcard, since I'm not getting any music.

You're BOTH wrong (as far as I am concerned)! ;)

Gradius 2 on the MSX (ported and revamped for the X68000 as Nemesis'90 Kai) is the best!
I've played all Gradii and like that one the most (so what if it's graphically dated now...the gameplay, music and level design are fantastic!).
Personally I am not too keen on Gradius Gaiden (*** runs as far away from UFO as possible to avoid a beating*** ;)) as it for some reason doesn't click while playing (music is great though)...
And after innitially liking Gradius V I got stuck at the end of stage 3 for some time and can't bother trying to get past it now (takes a f*cking long time to reach it and just loosing my lifes their and having to all through it again before getting another chance of passing isn't my cup of tea). Graphics are fantastic and so is some (start of stage 3) music but I have developped a certain antipathy towards the game at this moment!

But in general people seem to adore Gaiden and I suppose that makes for a good chance of you liking it as well...
