Coming from you, I'm not going to argue!

I have to ask, though, do you know of any specific strategy for escaping that checkpoint? It seemed like the ship's default speed and the game's hitbox made both evading and counter-attacking the tiles impossible. As it is, whenever I get to Gradius II's Gun Wall I have to treat it as something to kill on one life or else.

None of those games felt as cheap as Macross Plus for me.

Some games has cheap sections.. Macross Plus felt COMPLETELY cheap from the middle of stage 1 up until I could reach.... it's frigging annoying...

... and I'll probably play it again today, heh :D

If I remember right, you can fly close to the ceiling and be safe from the tiles above you. Then avoid the ones coming from the bottom by flying forward.

Thanks, that does sound like a much better approach than stuff I'd been trying. I'll have to give that a go next time I'm in that predicament.

Restarting in a Moai stage in any Gradius game is always a major pain. If I die there, it´s usually Game Over for me.

"I'll try going up this path. Oh shit, I can't. How was I supposed to know that? Oh well, I'll try the other path next time. Oh shit, guys come in from behind at that point. How was I supposed to know that, they point-blanked me? Well, next time I'll just know to avoid them." about a billion continues later, and you've gotten through the game.

Cheap deaths? Really?

Maybe not THE cheapest, but Metal Black is pretty cheap. Lots of crap from the rear of the screen all the time and lots of crap that pops suddenly out of the floor.

gradius V for me has lots of cheap deaths.
like just ignoring your surrounding and float silently into a wall.
Also the bullets are very slow and boring, it might happen that you start ignoring them, too, which isn't very clever at all.

Heh, that sounds very interesting. Slow moving bullets and stationary walls cause cheap deaths? How do you feel about getting killed by super fast bullets or moving walls?

Geometry Wars. Nothing like when shapes spawn in a cluster that you happen to be in the middle of.
Some of the best shmups don't actually end in a vowel.
No, this game is not Space Invaders.

Good point Pixel Outlaw. I love Super Stardust too, but that one dicks you over with some really cheap enemy spawning on occasion. Only on occasion, but that's enough when it get's you...

Gradius III -_-
(I thought stage 1 was nearly impossible without prior knownledge of which powerups to choose and where to shoot or position yourself. Then the boss is really easy T.T)

My shmup career has been sporadic and only covers maybe 50 of the best games, so i haven't experienced cheap deaths in rare terrible games. But of the "good" games, besides the memorizers like R-Types and Gradiuses, i think Raiden is probly the one that comes to mind for me.

Fucking point-blanking tanks. I've been playing this game off and on for 17 years and i still can't get past stage 3. I always get point-blanked by some random tank at the bottom left or right of the screen, in stage 2 almost without fail.
