ROMs anyone?

Post by doodude »

Im going to spend some time today trying to learn more about ROMs which I dont really know anything about.
My knowledge goes as far as:
1. You need an emulator that you can download & install, but thats all I understand about it.
2. You need to download a game ROM that I guess the emulator will cause to play on your computer.
How am I doin' so far?

Ive been trying to search the SHMUP site but I get every mention of ROM ever made & thats alot!

Can anyone point me in the right direction so I dont waste anymore time than needed?

Will ROM games open a whole new fantastic world of gaming for me or is it mostly a bunch of hoo-ha?

yep your in the right direction...
i would reccommend starting with mame preferably one with a frontend like mame 32 so you dont have to use dos..

install it and stick roms (google them)in the roms folder that will be created upon installation..then its just a matter of configuration ...

its certainly no hoo ha and will open up a world of arcade games on your p.c
i play pcbs and consoles but mame is still the best program evarrr!!

just dont ask for roms on the forum!!

So lemme ask ya sumpthin'. Does Vista... you know, like, bake cakes or do you have to revert to your good ol' XP oven to get your cakes to rise?

To clarify, you can talk and ask about emulation (different emulators for different systems, how to set it up, etc) all you want. But as to where to get the roms themselves, that's not allowed here.
No matter how good a game is, somebody will always hate it. No matter how bad a game is, somebody will always love it.

one note:
as mame changed over the years, so did the structure that it wanted the roms to be in. this means that some roms you find out there may be outdated to the newest version of mame. some may still work though.

So are mame32 & Zsnes etc the same thing only different.

Do they indeed work as well on Vista as XP or have they not caught up to Vistas programming req's?

"The same thing only different" = awesome. :D
Yes, both are emulators that run ROMs. A ROM is basically a perfect image of a game, much like an ISO is an image of a CD. The emulator makes the game think it's run on the authentic hardware.

Of course most modern emulators do.

I did notice & was going to ask why the ROMs seemed to be so sluggish feeling.
I would have thought on my PC, with all this processing power & big bloody graphics card etc etc it would play like a champ. Guess not, huh!?
Or...is it just me?

Ive got a Saitek stick fresh from the box but there seems to be a lot of play & its difficult to avoid enemies or catch PwrUps.

The graphics are way better on this 22" Flat Panel than on my TV & I dont really need to fool around & try to turn it sidways. Although I do have an extra 17" flat that I could, is it called, TATE? ( And what does that mean? )
Im like a total newb & its quite embarrasing to be so ignernt!

But, its at least a good thing to be able to checkout games on ROMs 1st to see if I want to invest in "the real thing" later. Ive got some trash that I wouldnt have spent the money on if I couldve tried B4 I buyed.
