Region Differences In Gradius V?

Post by BAD »

Hello. I apologize in advance if there is already a Gradius V thread somewhere else (don't have time to find it), but I have an important question. Some of you guys have probably played both the JP and US versions of the game, so here goes...

Are there any differences between the Japanese and/or American versions of the game? I've been playing with a friend who insists that there are differences; he says that the bosses seem to live longer in the Japanese version, and that the patterns come at different times (compared with the American version). Is this true?

Has he just gotten rusty at the game, or is he still really good and noticed the differences (as a result)? I've checked FAQs and stuff, but I got nothing. Any input?

I owned the US version 1st then got the import later on. I noticed zero differences in the 2. I think your friend has shoryuken.com-itis, he likes to pretend there are differences in games/various ports that aren't there.
Damn Tim, you know there are quite a few Americans out there who still lives in tents due to this shitty economy, and you're dropping loads on a single game which only last 20 min. Do you think it's fair? How much did you spend this time?

Options are called Multiples in the US version. The in-game voice for this power-up is also changed to match.

I think the boss health is affected by how powered-up you are. Maybe your buddy just lost a life in the US version during a boss fight.

I have the import version. If there are differences, this is the first I've heard of it.

Strider77: Hahaha! Awesome reply, man; I know exactly what you're talking about.

iatneH, ROBOTRON: Thanks, man. I'll forward the information to him.

Well, even though only a few of you actually replied, I think that if there were any major differences, they would've already been cited. Thanks a lot, guys, and if anyone ever does find anyting else, please don't hesitate to post it!

I don't know about boss health, but the rank is based on how powered up you are, so it would make sense that a death would make things 'appear' easier.

The Japanese version has Japanese subtitles when there is speaking, and Multiples are called Options.

The US, JP and PAL versions are all identical. Except in PAL version you can play at 50hz mode which is naturally a bit slower.

Oh, and the PAL version has a different score font. The NTSC/J versions have the classic Gradius font but the PAL version's font is different for some reason.
