I simply cannot agree because of games such as God of War, God of War2, Devil May Cry, Devil May Cry3, Ninja Gaiden, Resident Evil4 (not in the league of DMC or NJ but still supplied a good challenge), and so on.

Skyline seems to be full of himself as well; there are other retarded posts as well, but I won't bother with them. EDIT: If someone wants to enjoy mainstream games and not support the standard ideals of this forum and talk about shmups then more power to him. Most of us have already admitted to playing mainstream games anyway. I don't know what the problem is.

It's easier than Devil May Cry or Ninja Gaiden, but it still gave a good challenge.

Anyone can probably beat R-Type too if they tried. It just depends on how much effort a person wants to expend. It seems the only difficulty you consider "hard" is oldschool arcade shmup hard. A game can still be hard without it grabbing you by the balls from start to finish.

....A boss can be hard without you having to try a billion times. Fuck, there's a lot of bosses in the Dragon Quest games that I considered hard even if I beat them on my first try.

You're the first person I've ever heard who has said that. It sounds like you immediately conclude that if a game is 3D and has newschool gameplay, it can't be "hard."

Devil May Cry 3 was as hard as many excellent oldschool games that were considered hard. (MegaManX3 for example.) In fact, I found DMC3 harder than MMX3.

The stupidly hard difficulty you are talking about was usually only present in arcade games--mainly shmups. Most oldschool games weren't as hard as R-Type, Gradius, or Contra.
Am I saying that oldschool games are easy? No, but I think you are overpraising a large percentage's difficulty. I also do agree that many newschool games are easier, but it is nowhere near as bad as you make it seem.

No RE4 is easy. Once you get the system down your gonna beat it. Most people who say it's hard couldn't get the controls down and gave up immediately, if they put in more time they could beat it. Another thing that makes it easy is the ability to retry something right after you mess up and die. Most old school games would have you start over.

DMC3 and NG are challenging but not hard. The hurricane packs is a different story all together though

. I think people just have trouble with moving out of the way of things, once you get dodging down your set. You are correct to assume that most people find these hard. I think these same people find shmups hard for the same reason, they have trouble not being where the bad things are.

I never played GoW so I can't speak for this game.

I do believe that 3-D games can be just as hard though. In some ways fundamentally they are harder but do to the current state of gaming these types of games are made easier for today's gamer. Their are a few 3-D games that reach this level of difficulty though like God Hand or the Dante must Die modes in DMC3 and DMC1. But on the other hand I believe that 3-D games will never reach the level of intensity(not difficulty) of a manic-shmup.

How easy something is is arbitrary isn't it? My mum finds the opening level of Super Mario World hard. So is it hard or easy? Both surely.
