best PC shmups that are NOT freeware?(besides touhou& ke
so i want to find some obscure but awesome shmups for PC that are not freeware, but I know everyone is going to list touhou games & ketsui ...
i've played quite a few freeware ones over the past few months and i've really enjoyed a lot of them, but i'm craving more and i thought i would start by looking into some of the not freeware games for PC ...
soo ... any recommendations?

You mean Kamui.indstr wrote:ketsui
Steel Saviour is supposed to be good. I bought it a while ago but didn't get around to trying it yet.
And then there's "The Reap", which I suggested in last week's PC shmup thread.

Long ago there was a cool commercial PC shmup called "Prototype", which resembled R-Type and had cool music. I think it was of german origin. Too bad the name is so generic that's it's near impossible to google it :/
Anyone know anything about this? The first level was a jungle I think.

Are you perhaps thinking of this? I think its sequel was in Shmup-dev Competition 2007 Round 2.Shocky wrote:Long ago there was a cool commercial PC shmup called "Prototype", which resembled R-Type and had cool music. Of course, that's just an opinion.

You are looking for Prototype from 1995, by Austrian developer Neo software. Neo software also made Whale's Voyage, later became part of Rockstar Games (Rockstar Vienna), created Max Payne Xbox and worked on console ports of GTA games etc. Rockstar Vienna was eventually closed in 2006, apparently without any prior warning to its 97 employees, who found themselves locked out of their offices on May 11th, 2006.Shocky wrote:Long ago there was a cool commercial PC shmup called "Prototype", which resembled R-Type and had cool music. Prototype is indeed almost impossible to find because of the generic name/limited distribution. If you are looking for a copy to buy, then I'd say you are out of luck. However, the game can be downloaded at Home of the Underdogs (an abandonware site). Since it's a DOS game, you'll need "DOS in a Box" to run it on a modern Windows PC.
Not sure if I'm allowed to link to it, but since Neo software ceased to exist long ago and because of the shitty way Rockstar Games treated Rockstar Vienna, here you go:

Yep, that's it. Thanks for the thorough answer! Too bad such good games can be lost in time so efficiently...Ceph wrote: You are looking for Prototype from 1995, by Austrian developer Neo software...

i have, and even tho, they are kinda funny, they run a lil choppy here and there (its like the game enter in a "matrix mode" or somethin... at least in my computer and on my friend's new rigg)... and because of that, i stopped playin them, since it makes them feel unfinished or somethin.alysa wrote:Mutant Storm, Space Tripper, Alien Abduction and The Reap are all worth the money I paid for them. Although the Reap might not be to easy to find now a days. I haven't bought them yet but XNeo and Xenoblast look like they might be worth it. Has anyone played them yet?
