Standing or Sitting?

Post by Harlequin »

Hi

I have made the decision to go with a Mame setup but was just
wondering what people prefer, standing or sitting playing Shmups?

From what i can remember i never sat and played a game in
the arcades ever but these ready built 'Astro City' or 'Zegret' cabinets
are built so you can sit on those stupid stools

I know this is all the craze these days so just wanted to know
should i go old school like i remember and stick to tradition
or conform and be a slack ass old fart that i am and use those
stupid stools while getting my Shmup fix? :D

It all depends on your cabinet. If it is as low as a Taito Egret or any Candy Cab then you will have to sit on a stool. I'd personally prefer these.

I should of clarrified just asking what people's preference is :)

I am building it at the moment, going for standing.

Would it make much difference, eye level etc?

If you are playing short, old-skool games that last 2-5 minutes on an average play and you are not planning on stretching that out (ie - going for high score), no problem. But, when you are marathoning Robotron for over an hour, you'll wish you had a place to park your butt.
Shooters, if you are planning on 1cc'ing them, can take up to 30 minutes +, just fyi.

make the cab stand-up style and buy a bar stool or two for that specific height. there are plenty of options out there.

Sitting...whether it be console or cab. The only shmup I prefer standing is ROBOTRON2084.

Depends.

I was playing R-Types on the PSX and I found myself sitting when I'm going ok and standing when I'm kicking ass.

The only situation i stand up while playing a shmup is when something very annoying or very awesome happens.
Mostly standing up isn't the only reaction.. :?

I hate standing for any length of time because my calves end up hurting and I keep shifting my feet.

Sit-down candies all the way.

The only arcade games I play standing up are GuitarFreaks and IIDX.

And you're building a MAME cabinet. Are you really only going to be playing it for 2-5 minutes at a time?

Always standing, unless I'm playing with someone else. But at a cabinet even with other people I stand.

I like to stand, unless it is a candy. Back in my heyday, we didn't have stools in the arcade, so why do we need them? Gaming is not the most active hobby, so why not burn a calorie or two by swaying?

Sit. You'll kill your knees standing for too long.

This does happen to me when standing around shopping but if I can sit for about 10 seconds in between long standing gaming sessions it doesn't bother me. I run for hours yet it doesn't hurt me as much as standing completely still at the mall. And like Brian says it burns more calories. I also pace sometimes which also minimizes knee pain with my body.

You could also ride an exercise bike while gaming for hours and burn some serious weight, I've done this in the past.

Sitting. Standing still for any amount of time is bothersome. Running and being up and about is one thing, but just standing is annoying and my legs get tired.

Some people claim that you can concentrate better when you stand because sitting is a more relaxed position, but as long as you don't hunch way over or use a stool with a back, then it isn't that relaxing at all.

Sitting or standing, dont matter too much to me.

I can stand in one place for a long time, though I might shift my feet and such a good deal while doing it.

But, gotta do that at arcades, so.....

I tend to prefer sitting, possibly with tall stools. A good control desk is also helpful, if you're going custom you can try to have the joystick and the rest of the desk ( the name again...) to offer support for at least of your forearms.

I thought it had been scientifically proven that people think faster when standing? This includes improved response times and physical co-ordination, possibly due to the increased rate at which blood is pumped through the brain because you're body is basically less relaxed than if you were sitting.

That would be really interesting to find out.

sitting all the way- but it's got to be on a high stool.
I've got an Egret cab and I have it raised to it's as tall as all my US cabs (Come to think of it, I've also got the screen tilted to a steeper angle. We don't I just have a us cab?)
