The very 1st Shoot Em Up Game!

Post by ST Dragon »

Space War! (1962)

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Spacewar%21

It even featured Two Players, simultaneously (only)! :)

For anybody having a hard time tracking down a PDP-1 hardware Platform, don't despare, there is also a Java applet of Spacewar!

We've come a long way since then! ;)

I like that the first was an arena shooter, before the genre was broken into vets and horis.

For a great update of Space War, try Star Control 2: The Ur-Quan Masters. It was originally released for PC and ported to the 3DO, but a few years ago the original creators made a freeware PC version that combines the best features of both. You can play the main campaign if you want, but I think more shooter fans would be interested in Super Melee, where you just pick ships and go at it against a person or the computer.

Cool, Thanks!
I remember having awesome death-matches against my mate and his brother in the original Star Control 1 on his 286 16Mhz PC!
Nostalgia.

The Ur-Quan flagship & the Mycon sphere ship were always my ships of choice! Usually I would prevail using just them against their entire fleets!

I see there are quite a few new additions:

By the way, the best way to play Spacewar! is on Vectrex, the port is called Space Wars.

It's a port of this arcade version of the game from cinematronics, which is also vector based. The bottom screen here also shows copyright info that says "manufactured under license from cinematronics incorporated", though the text in that photo is small.
