First off, nice site you got here. I've been reading for a while and Im big fan of shmups.
So I got my HRAP2 yesterday and its really huge and im doing worse with it than with a pad or keyboard. I have heard it takes some time to get used to. Got any pointers to speed things up?
I thought about getting converter to GC and PC. Anyone have any experience on PC with sticks? Keyboard or stick?
My first stick HRAP2 - Couple questions...
Hold it in one of the commonly accepted forms.
Loosen the stick up a bit.
May want to swap those Hori buttons for Sanwa buttons to add sensitivity so that you can rapid fire better (unless you're an autofire user).
Get a Pelican converter to play pretty much flawlessly on a PC.
Use the stick exclusively when possible, even in games when it doesn't really make sense.

I've had mine for a few months and I don't think I'm completely used to it yet. But here's what I've tried so far:
I guess the first thing to do is to find a good place to put it. I guess your lap would do, but I just keep it on my desk and straighten my posture. Whatever's comfortable of course.
Now there's the issue of actually holding the stick. There's some recent discussion in http://shmups.system11.org/viewtopic.php?t=17443 so take a look. I personally have my thumb and index finger wrapping the top, the middle finger wrapping the shaft thingy and my ring and pinky are folded.
After that, just use the darn thing! Play anything and everything you can get your hands on. Try playing platformers, puzzle games, fighters or whatever. It was different trying to play Megaman or Ghosts 'n' Goblins with a stick, but sooner or later you get the motions down. If you play fighters, definitely practice hadoken and shoryuken motions and make sure you can execute either at will. It took a lot of time for me to get 2x hadokens down, and even then I still mess it up.
As for converters, I don't have a GC one but I have this generic blue PS2 to USB thingy that I bought off ebay. I haven't noticed any input lag issues, but I hear some people do so you should keep an eye out.
BTW do you play CPMA?
