Dreamcast vs XBox 360...

Hey Guys

Just wondering which would be better to pick up for my SHmup fix?

The Dreamcast is tempting becuase SO MANY cool Shmups
that are DC exclusive and a few Arcade ports are on it but I
am thinking maybe the XBox360 might be better as its got Shiki 3
and Raiden Aces coming on it and who knows what else
will com out fo it in the future.

My question tho is about emulation on the Xbox360, if it could
do Mame or *dreaming* DC emulation then my decision would
be easy :)

Which should i get?

For now, DC. Too many good shmups on the system.

You're just tweaked because it kicked your ass :lol:


But yeah, go with the DC. The 360 has a long way to go before it matches the library of shmups the DC currently has.

Yup, DC has an extensive library.. and the 360 isn't quite where the original xbox is in terms of emulation...

another point for the DC... i got mine 2 years ago, and cant have enough shmup fix from it...

... and if you're a cave fan, the PS2 will give you some pretty good fixes too (i've recently bought mine, and cant have enough DDP DOJ).

I think Wii is getting Shiki 3, anyways. But of those 2, I would definitely get the Dreamcast, especially for shmups. For the 360, from what I know, only Senko no Ronde and Raiden Aces are worth it (shmupwise), but I don't have a 360, so I can't say...

shmups = DC for sure.

360 = FPS for sure.

Wii.

Tons of old school shmups. TG16, SNES, etc. Lots of new ones coming out as well.

Maybe they'll throw in Jaguar emulation so we can play a good version of Raiden.

Do you have a modded PS2 yet? There are exclusives on Saturn and DC that will keep those consoles alive for me, but damn, the modded ps2 has an absurd number of shmups. How would a 360 help fill your shmup needs?

i already have a PC for that... and if you can hook it up to a TV, you'll have even more fun out of it.

and yes, modded PS2s are a pretty good deal, if you wanna play imports.

Hey guys thanks for the replies, looks like Dreamcast is ahead
at the moment but not by much :D

Yes i do have a PS2 modded i bought a year or so ago for the Cave
ports which i decided to do through this site :D

So now i need my next Shmup fix hence the post :)

I am in the process of building a MAME cabinet for the old Shooters
and also my mate is getting a Wii for Geomytry Wars ;)

I am a huge Raiden fan and i like what im hearing about SHiki 3
so its tenptung and i just think in the future emulation will be pretty
cool on the next gen machines (I HOPE).

The Dreamcast have Ikuruga and Border DOwn tho which i really WNAT to play as well as Karous and a couple other Arcade ports too...

So hard to choose :)

Then there is the question of saying i will get nothing and save for
a real Cab with supergun and just get the proper PCB versions instead :D

No i am not rich but i can afford the cabinet, just the cost of the PCB's
scare me and my wallet :(

I don't know if this helps your decision in any way, but if you'll have access to that Wii you mention, you could always buy a GameCube controller and then grab the GC version of Ikaruga. It's not as arcade-perfect as the DC version, but it's fairly close (plus has some replays built in).

One other thing that I'm surprised hasn't been mentioned:

DC = Dirt Cheap
360 = costs a heck of a lot more.

Also:

DC: development is about done.
360: probably will see 5 more years of games, at least. And there's a lot worth playing on it already, with more coming...not just shmups.

My advice...if all you want are shmups, get the DC now and the 360 when the price drops a bit further. Make sure you get a version with a hard drive, as many shmups will be Live Arcade games and you'll want some space to download them.
