Early 90's mostly side scrolling mech/ship shmup - name??

I'm trying to figure out the name of an older arcade game..

It's a late 80's/early 90's arcade game - horizontal scrolling space shooter where you pilot this transforming "mech"...

I wish I could give more details - I remember that the first level was like, this "sub-subterranean"/underground level. I think you start out as a ship then, the level kind of "opens up" a little so that the screen scrolls a bit vertically up/down if you go up high/down low. When the level kind of "opens up", you can "transform" into this "floating mech/robot" character with guns blazing. I remember the mech was sort of "metallic looking"/gray. If anyone knows the game I'm talking about, it would be SOOO appreciated!! Someone already suggested Robotech and Macross but, those aren't it and they suggested I ask here so, hopefully someone can think of it. *fingers crossed*
