Geometry Wars: Galaxies is amazing.

Post by fixjuxa »

I know it's not a shmup technically(or is it? I forget what it takes to be labeled a "shmup" around here) but it's amazing nonetheless. Anybody else loving this game? With 60+ single player levels and all new enemies and strategies it's a highscore chasers dream. Anyway, just wanted to see if the shooter fanatics around here were liking this game as much as I am. Don't think for a second this game isn't worth $40. The replay value is through the roof.

Are you referring to the Wii or DS version?

It has levels? Good. One of my gripes concerning the previous iterations.

If the DS version is as good as I hear the Wii version is, I'l certainly be picking it up.

Not the Wii version, though; that blasted thing dont have remotely enough games for it to be worth a purchase from me yet (or worth the SEARCH to find one, for that matter).

I DEFINITELY woulda rather seen this on the 360 though, instead of the Wii. Hell, even the PS3 woulda been a better choice.

I have to wonder how this'd control on the DS.... having to use the stylus to aim or some crap like that would likely get on my nerves.

depends on what you like or how MUCH you need. Following games on Wii are pretty awesome:

-metroid prime 3
-mario galaxy
-resident evil 4: wii edition
-zelda:twilight princess

- already huge virtual console library
add to that huge user base and the fact that many developers are beginning to commit themselves for Wii, and you have pretty good investment on your hands..

On the other hand, if Fps shooters are your only interest, Xbox 360 is definitely better.

I didn't even know this was out yet. I completely forgot there were other cool games apart from Bangaioh Spirits, Ketsui DS and No More Heroes on the way... How's the DS version?

The game is excellent on the Wii; one of the most addictive games I have played in my life. Playing with the classic controller is very good, but I also found the remote and nunchuck to work well, which surprised me. As I play, if my hands get cramped, I will switch to the remote setting and my scores actually sometimes go up with this format.

Is the DS one out in stores? Today is the release date, but stores usually get the games a couple days later. From the previews, I heard it runs at a lower framerate than the Wii version, but still plays well.

There is supposed to be a way to control the Wii version with a DS as well.

edit:
My bad, they just link-up to unlock bonus content.

I'm bummed they didn't release this on the 360.

The Wii version works with the classic controller, right? I played this for a bit at PAX, where they were using the Wiimote pointer/nunchuck combo, and I found it difficult to aim.

Yeah, it works with the classic controller.

Aside from Galaxy, the Wii is a failure system.

Then again the PS3 doesn't have any good games, and the 360 lacks variety.. guess what? This generation sucks.

Takarajima Z is one of my favorite games of the year. I think I like it even more than Galaxy. :)

Oh, Zack and Wiki? I might check that out. I don't like trial-and-error games all that much though. Touch Detective was one of them.

If you liked PC adventure games like Secret of Monkey Island, Zack and Wiki ('Takarajima Z' in Japan - that's the version I have) is sorta like that but with really fun, interactive controls and puzzles. Graphics are stellar with their cel-shading too.

It was either checking that out or Trauma Center: New Blood.

Trauma Center's also a good series, but it's also pretty frustrating. I have the DS version, which is pretty hard. :(

Worthwhile games on the Wii:
Zelda: Twilight Princess
Metroid Prime 3
Super Paper Mario
Mario Galaxy
Zack and Wiki
A number of excellent Virtual Console games including Mario 64, Sin & Punishment, Mario Bros 3, Ocarina of Time, etc.

These are all really good games. For me, the Wii is already well worth the price, and Smash Bros Brawl isn't even out yet!

Maybe none of those games really do it for you personally but they have all pretty much met with great acclaim from the gaming press as being excellent games.

Back on topic... if I already own Geometry Wars, is it even worth it buying this for the Wii? How much more is in there?

Apparently SPM is rather mediocre.

Gosh, I wonder if these were on other consoles previously? It makes me think whether I should pay for the exact same thing in rom format over again. Also, almost every single VC game has NTSC/PAL conversion issues, making almost every single VC game not worth buying. Not only is paying for roms fucking retarded, but emulators can do it better.

The problem is that if everyone keeps paying attention to garbage review sites like IGN and Gamespot nobody's going to be playing the games that get missed, which is a crying shame. Like God Hand, for example.

God Hand? Even in game rankings, reader reviews were somewhere around 7.1, but of course, if you don't want to play what masses play.. which is the reason many of us are posting here :)

Each to his own, I guess.. but I'll stick with Wii - without that I'd be still playing shmups only.

How easy do you think it is to make it through this game with an intermediate level of JPN?

It really is too bad that this game is selling so poorly.

^_ yeah I know but I don't have a NA Wii. It would be awsome if it was region-free because there is still no date for Metroid Prime 3 and Ghost Squad is 2000 Wii points cheaper in NA.

I don't think it would be hard at all. Most of the puzzles just require thinking, and can be done without any extensive knowledge of Japanese. The text in the game is nothing complicated.
