Post by pixeljunkie »

I just bought a copy, curious what people think of it. Anxious to get it.

Very good, it's a long shooter with very nice graphics (well, not as good as Spriggan or GoT obviously but still very good) and feels like Star Soldier but much more "epic" gameplay. Lots of neat stuff happening in the background like other cruisers fighting, ect. It's much better than Alzadick it's "summer carnival" prequel of sorts which was basically just a score competition of 2 small levels. This is a full game.

Excellent game, good music and the game is similar to Super Star Soldier, not surprising since it's by the same company. *-neo

I LOVE Super Star Soldier, so that makes me really excited to hear people compare it to that. Now to commence foaming of the mouth until it arrives.

Nexzr is quite cool. Very difficult iirc, but I haven't played it in a long time.

You simply MUST get Spriggan if you like PCE shmups. It's absolutely wonderful. :D

Not that long and not that hard IMO but definitely a very fun traditional shooter. It's also a 1-button wonder so you can forget about using a bomb as a crutch.

I owned Nexzr for a while, like others have said it's fun but nothing really spectacular...I do remember the soundtrack kicked ass though...I still have a tape of the music I made somewhere around here....

I think it's one of the best Soldier-ish shmups on the PCE, though it requires a bit more memorisation than, say, SSS or Soldier Blade. Better than Spriggan, in my opinion.

If you purchased the Summer Carnival '93 -version, you'll be getting the traditional Score and Time Attacks to go with it.

Bah, all these posts about old PCE CD shmups is making me go on Ebay and re-buy all the old PCE games I used to own.

So far I already bought Gradius 2, Macross 2036, and R-Type. Make it stop!!!

it's far from easy from stage 3 onward, but the control feels extremely smooth. one of my favourite PCE verts with spriggan 1.
also the graphics are incredibly crisp, and the music is very very good.

Really, it's all about memorising the hard parts and knowing which weapon to pick. Actually, you can get through the whole game on one weapon alone, I think on my 1CC I kept the weapon that shoots at 45 degree angle (not the laser) the whole time.

yeah, but you could say that for all memorization based shmups.
i agree it's not rayxamber2, but it's no coryoon or sylphia either, on a difficulty scale i would put it slightly above winds of thunder.

Well, true. Not as much memorisation is required, but for some parts is almost necessary.

I remember reading somewhere that Star Parodia uses Nexzr's engine. That's pretty amusing, considering Nexzr is really difficult (or so I hear), and Parodia is by far, the easiest shmup I've ever played.

Can someone make a movie of Nexzr's intro? I'm too poor to get the original release, and apparently, that's the only thing it has over SC'93.

It kicks ass, no doubt about it.

@OFX: Do you have any idea how to rip the intro movie? I could try and put it up somewhere.

I think it's by far the nicest looking shooter on the PCE, you never see any of the designs being cluttered, it's all very anime-ish two or three tone flat surfaces - look at the moon in the background of stage 2 for example. The enemy & obstacle designs are all rather nice too.

Gameplay wise I agree about it handling very smoothly, it's that unidentifyable property - it just feels 'right'. Weapons are nothing amazing but are just powerful enough in most cases, it's never Star Soldier like where you can just sit with fire held down, all in all it's fairly tough unless you have all the stages memorized.

IMO it's pretty much Naxat's best and with enough design flare to come out above the Star Soldier games too.

Not a clue. I think the best way would be to plug the console into a PC capture card and record an AVI of it.

You could also start it up in MagicEngine, and rapdily hit the screenshot button as fast as you can. Then put them all together to make a huge animated gif. I wouldn't want to do that, though.

if you mean Nexzr Special ie Summer Carnival 93, then i have played this and it sucks big time i found it pretty dull and uninspiring actually, cheesy title music too, although the first level music is actually pretty cool. It is by Kaneko, who made Aeroblasters on the MD too (not sure if they made pce version of this) and i didnt rate this much either, although good graphics. the game starts off really..... slow.... i often find myslef dying on the first level as i tend to get bored and start darting about the screen in boredom and then a slow enemy craft will suddenly pop out and hit me. it is a total 'memory' based shmup and so it doesnt get the adrenalin going much. i think i have reached level four, although i cant claim to have gotten 'stuck in' and played it for hours on end. it is simply too dull, and i would rather play other shmups on the engine such as darius 2. sorry to piss all over your new purchase, but you asked..................

Your "piss" was defledcted by all the numerous great reviews given for this game...so no problem. I'll add my impressions after it arrives.

Well I think that was a fair review. It's not really ALL THAT as people here are making it out to be. It was mediocre enough that I bought it, beat it, and sold it in about 2 weeks time. It's definitely nowhere as good as Soldier Blade or Super Star Soldier.

I mean just look at the screenshots. The fact that most of the time you just get a dull black space background should tell you something.

Yea, its good...think Super Star Soldier with more memorization. Including everyones favorite, CHECKPOINTS!!! Yay!!!! (Don't die!)
The music is "calming"...but that doesn't mean it sucks.

I can understand how the checkpoints, and difficulty, might throw some shmup-o's off, when they're used to manic-ness/ instant re-spawns and bombers.

Nope, no bombs in Nexer.

No crutches as someone stated on this very forum :P

Who ever it was needs to do the honours and say the famous line :P

btw is it similar to Recca or totally different?
The graphics are very clean looking I must say.

Got it yesterday, gave it about 30 minutes play.

I dig the long-ass intro.

I dig the art style, very clean and precise.

Music is what I would expect.

Took some getting used to the gameplay, coming off a long period of ESPrade and Batrider. Level 3 is intense and CHEAP! I'm anxious to give it some more time this weekend. Overall I like it alot.

Crutches? Ugh...that was me, but that was regarding the use of "savestates".
Bombs are ok, by me.
