As much as I love the graphics for Sigma Star, the game can be impossible at times. Because sometimes you get the huge ass ship in a narrow cooridore level. YOu can't FIT and boom instant death. The game isn't pure shmup but the fights are......
Some of the best shmups don't actually end in a vowel.
No, this game is not Space Invaders.

Ahhh yeah, Sigma Star. Forgot about that one. Only shmup (or half shmup, call it what you will) that I've ever sold.
Not a fan of Guardian Legend either, for that matter. It's not that I don't like hybrid games either, cause I did like Xexyz quite a bit (despite questionable controls during the sidescroller bits).

I was previously conflicted on this topic, that is until I played Divine Sealing for the first time today. All of it's terribleness aside, I can't imagine how anyone ever finished that game without save states. It becomes impossible in the latter levels (and not in that challenging way we all love, either). Only an eight year old starved for digital titties could beat that thing.

...I 1cc'd it, along with a few others on the board. The 1cc was on the first try, thank god. It is horrible indeed.futurebiblehero wrote:I was previously conflicted on this topic, that is until I played Divine Sealing for the first time today. That's my point. Let's say I don't think R-Type or Raiden are good games at all because I don't feel they're still playable 20 years later. They were interesting because stepping farther into the unknown territory of STG, but don't remain good from my point of view because I don't enjoy playing them AT ALL today. I don't like the art, the music, or the gameplay. But I totaly enjoy playing pulstar, even though it's old and old school and even though modern shmups do better in many aspects, because I still enjoy it's art and gameplay. So Pulstar will remain good from my point of view.I don't understand the impressions of old shooters as being sucky and outdated. A game is good when it's not only a groundbreaker, but is also still very playable 20+ years later. Whether a game is better than another though is really subjective. Style preferences aside, what exactly is worse about these older games? And, I could point out ways in which modern shooter design could be perceived as weaker.
I'm a little surprised to see that many of you seem to still enjoy the old R-Type (1987) and Raiden 1 though. But if, like me, you don't, then you probably agree with what I say. Right ?
So the question is, do you still call a game good when you think it's not worth playing at all anymore, but that it was good compared to what was done at it's time ?

I recently tried the PS2 reincarnation of ChoAniki. What a piece of crap. I started over several times and the starting level seems to be random, but no matter where I started off, there's not a single chance that anyone can find anything positive about this one. Ugly as hell and absolutely no fun whatsoever.
Extremely disappointing for a game released by X'Nauts (=Psikyo staff ?).

Nanostray - DS: This game is horrible. In order to change weapons, you have to tap the screen twice. What the fuck is that shit? Why in the hell not just have the shoulder buttons do it? The main weapons are also pretty weak, so it becomes necessary to use the super weapons, which drain life. As if that wasn't enough, there's this invisible border going around the lower part of the screen near the edges which you'll unfortunately discover when you're peppered with the barrage of bullets it seemed you were going to dodge.
Metal Slug Anthology - Wii: All of the control schemes with the Wiimote are horrible, there is no classic controller support, and if you use a Gamecube controller, you have to use the analog stick. There's no option for a D-pad. It would be a solid title if the controls weren't so tedious and cumbersome.
Two games ruined largely due to fancy control schemes being crammed in just for the sake of having them akwardly "work".

I think danny's choice - B-Wings - wins this little award because of the sheer effort the man went through to express his hatred of the game. How many of these other "bad" games have there actually been videos of, eh?
After watching the video, I almost went looking for the rom, but then I had to stop and wonder why. Kinda like when someone says don't look and you do anyway, only to regret it later.

The screen only has to be tapped once to change weapons. Using the screen is somewhat awkward, but it's much easier with the thumb strap (I also read that the Japanese one allows you to switch weapons with the X button). Super weapons don't drain life, they drain a power meter that is filled by collecting blue coins.Naslectric27 wrote:Nanostray - DS: In order to change weapons, you have to tap the screen twice. 1) It's still stupid to have to tap the screen to change weapons. That's something I would much rather not do in the heat of battle. This is the perfect example of game where the stylus and touch screen should have been excluded.BrianC wrote:The screen only has to be tapped once to change weapons. 2) It doesn't matter what they drain, it shouldn't be necessary to rely on them in order to survive. They should be for when you're trapped or otherwise have no way out.
You missed my point.Naslectric27 wrote:1) It's still stupid to have to tap the screen to change weapons. That's something I would much rather not do in the heat of battle. 1) I agree the touch screen use is stupid, but it's still much less awkward if you don't use the stylus and use something else like the thumb strap instead.
2) To me, draining life is a bit different from draining refillable energy from a meter. The secondary weapons aren't something that drain health every time they are used. They can be used often and are refilled by getting the blue coins that are obtained by defeating groups of enemies. You don't have to rely only on the secondary weapons in order to survive.
3) It's a bit unfair to judge a game before learning the mechanics of it.

It should be just about identical to the Fujitsu FM-7 version.doctorx0079 wrote:Well yeah, putting it on a Model III would be retarded, though there was a decent clone of Nintendo's Space Firebird for the Model III.Alpolio wrote:OMG! Your talking about the CoCo. For a while there, I thought that you were talking about Radio Shack's old business line of Z80 machines. I kept thinking, "WTF? I would like to point out here that there were many good games for the TRS-80 Color Computer. Sadly this was not one of them.
Nevertheless, CoCo Silpheed is total cack. They took the old 2D PC game and tried to water it down to Atari 2600 level. Lousy graphics, almost no sound, and the gameplay is terminally boring and repetitive. It was like they just slapped something together. I wish they had consulted Steve Bjork. Oh well.

After trying this out recently I can wholeheartedly agree with this.Danny wrote: This meter stick of poorness for me happens to be an arcade game called B-Wings also known as Battle Wings in some parts of the world.
It´s so bad, there should be a law against it.

I couldn't recall playing any shooters in the past that I would consider to be "bad", that is until I read this thread and formerly blocked-out games came back to my memory (BlaZeon, ew).
Anyway, the last shooter that I really disliked would have to be the GBA port of R-Type III. Just an overall shoddy port, especially when compared with the Phalanx port on the same system. Though I did read on Wikipedia that its developers, Raylight Studios, had to make the port from scratch, so I don't outright hate the game.
My entry will most likely be tentative, at least until I play some of the other mentions in this thread.
I'm staying the hell away from Deep Blue, though.

I had to enroll in an anger management class after playing this game.

Sure it is not a good game but for some odd reason I like it. Heh I can 1 life to the last stage (stage 4) and then it is instant game over. As a youth, I pay $30

I made that game worth my money and squeeze every drop of goodness from it.

NO TRS-80 SILPHEED IS THE WORST SHMUP EVER!!! WHY DON'T YOU BELIEVE ME?!?!?
Honestly, there are any number of old games from before, say, 1985, which are technically shmups, and stink. Think of those old LCD games. Maybe they were fun for 5 minutes when you were 6 years old. Would you want to play those now? How long could you stand it? To do the exact same simple limited actions over and over, with the same crummy graphics that never change? TRS-80 Silpheed is a lot like that. But surely you guys can think of Apple II games, C64 or VIC-20 games, hell, even Timex Sinclair games that suck just as bad. Let's hear it.
That Transformers game looks pretty bad.
